Don't know if this has been discussed before, but I have been suggested to try here to get an answer.
I posted in the General Questions forum about how editors etc are made and if anyone could let me know, so if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. General Questions Thread |

I've seen about the database headers and that you will need these first, but wehre do you get them from and what's the best program to use with them?

You can't really write a guide about how to write an editor just like there isn't a definitive guide on how to write a game.
People will tell you how they like to do things and others will tell you their way.
Can I ask what kind of programming experience you have before we go any further?
If you haven't got any (or very little) then you really shouldn't be looking at stuff as advanced as editors right now.

Only language I know is VB.
If editors are a lot of programming, what about things like FM Scout? How can you do things like that as I assume that would be easier then an editor?

Well, not exactly, no. Because they still utilise the game db by querying it. On top of that, it's the save game structure which SI do not publicise.

| So how do people make them? Is it just down to their individual hard work in trying to unlock the secrets, or are they SI employees and so have inside info?

Hard work mate. I'm sorry but it's a lot of hard work.
SI help us a bunch by releasing their db structure to us (something which they don't have to do by the way).
SI sometimes help out with missing data types, and stuff like that. Overall, you can't complain!
