I can understand what you are trying to say, but the match engine is a drastic improvement over the previous version. There are ways (or loopholes) to give your players instructions that may not seem so straighforwrd, but I think you can 'manipulate' the match engine to your needs.
One such example:
I have read certain defensive line discussions amongst these posts in an attempt to shed some light on the matter. For me, it matters not what you put the defensive line on—at least with regards to the 2-D match engine. This is the only place that I really want to see the results of my actions. I really don't care about percentages and statistics—I want to see it happen on screen—this is where the excitement should come from. I'm not interested that slider x placed at position z is equal to n. (I hope you have forgiven me for my over exuberant and over theatrical hypothesis on Wwfans post. As witty as it was

). Anyway, I had tried and tried to get a really really deep line for away games (when I'm a weaker team), with no success. I had defensive line on 1, I had my centre backs on ultra defensive. Nothing. There was no obvious difference. Then, I decided to play barrows on my two centre backs. Boom! As soon as the opposition won the ball, my 2 centre backs would back pedal and drop off very quickly. Not only did this solve my defensive line issue, but it also made my DM look as though he was actually a defensive midfielder and not part of the back 4 due to the extra space in between. This is just one example of getting things to work in your favor. I definitely think that the formation itself is overlooked. It's the most basic part of your formation, yet I feel it's most effective and influencial. Instead of giving all these specific instructions, throw a few arrows in there for the most DRAMATIC effect, and supplement with the specifics (sliders). I play a very non-traditional looking 4-4-2, but it works a treat. Just because something might not look 'right' on paper, or not 'realistic' it doesn't mean it doesn't work. Use barrows to good effect and you can pretty much have an attacking formation that is really quite defensive when you lose the ball. My wingers are really advanced but they have barrows leading to the regular wing position and when we lose the ball, they drop back quickly.
Remember:
Formation and arrows = effective and influencial
sliders = fine tuning and specifics
any thoughts?
