This thread has really helped my llm game - lets keep it going.

I dont seem to have any problems getting promoted from the conf south but as soon as I get promoted I cant win a game - I dont believe this is because the standard is way higher so whats happening - do you find you have to change your tactics drasticly after promotion?

One thing to remember to be sure is that most of the tactics talked about in this forum don't apply to low level teams. I'll second the physical stats argument, go for players with good ones, especially a lot of pace on your attackers. I like to keep passing on direct, my goal keeper passing to the backline and no through balls on anyone. I also tend to pass down the flanks. Basically, players at this level will just suck at passing. I tend to also go with run onto balls instead of play to head or feet because you end up playing a lot of ping pong back and forth otherwise. I basically turn off forward runs on everyone as well, mainly due to players getting too tired too early otherwise.

For this level, I try to get one really good striker and then I mostly focus on my defense and goal keeper and play countering stuff instead. I like the 3-5-2 with the wingers either in wing back positions or barrowed. I keep the CBs in zone and not tight marking and low closing down. Basically I want to keep as many bodies between the goal and the ball as possible. I then put one forward and a couple of mids on higher closing down. I use the 3-5-2 because the players are not that great and you want to control the mid field. Too many times with a 4-4-2, you just end up playing volleyball around midfield. With that extra guy in the middle, sometimes you can get a good break away.

I had really good results playing a short passing style in the conf south but as soon as promoted nothing worked - looking at my players all physical stats are rubbish. Keep the ideas comming - its about time we had some lower league tactics

So been promoted using my long ball style footie - but now really struggling in the conferance national - is it time to get more passing into my style of play?

To be honest I think its just a case of following the instructions listed - longball - strong defenders and pay strikers
