Tempo and Creative Freedom - How they work together?
Tempo Affects how fast they move the ball around. That's it. Its that simple. The faster your tempo, the quicker they will look to move the ball around. The slower the tempo, the more patience they will show in moving the ball around. That I think we can all agree on.
Does high tempo mean you play risky football? I don't think so..I think that happens because of other factors. Risky football happens mainly due to mentality and I think to a larger extent creative freedom. If a player has high CF and is giving an attacking mentality, he will attempt when Noel likes to call the "Hollywood Pass".
Mentality is supposed to affect positioning and passing we know that much, so it makes a lot of sense if you want to play attacking football, and you have high tempo, then the risk of playing a poor pass is high. So what you need to do is control CF around the players who're given TTB. Give those players low CF especially the ones in the middle of the park.
How do I play possession football, leave mentality on normal, slow down your tempo, and try and play short passing, your possession should go up. In theory at least..i've been able to make formations that have been defensively solid because I control the tempo of the game.
There are some things I'm not sure about and I think some of you may feel the same way. I don't see this happening in the game and I've tried it unless they is some magic button i haven't found: Playing defensive possession football. I would think that you could also slow down tempo, play short passing and have a defensive mentality to play keep football, but looking at the patchlist fix, it makes me think that its not possible now but may be in the patch.
Right now I believe that you can play at normal to quickish tempo and still do well. In the premiership you can even play a hightempo, high closing down game to mimic the real world.

In FM 06 there was an unusually clear correlation between possession and tempo, with slow tempos resulting in better possession, independent of other settings. (That is, with all other settings fixed to 10 (the middle) for both sides.) You also passed the ball far more when your tempo was slower, if anyone finds that significant. This relationship may break down when combined with other settings (mentality, timewasting, etc.) but in isolation, slow tempo increases possession in 06.
I only just got FM 07 a day ago so I can't say if this relationship still holds, (and tbh, I probably won't do any real testing to check). The TT&F07 thread probably gives a better sense of how similar the match engine is to 06.
As far as CF goes, two things: 1) is there a trade-off between controlling indiscriminate risky thru balls from the players set to TTB by putting them on low CF, versus having them on high CF, aggressively searching out openings in space so that they're positioned to make good thru balls in the first place? (Or maybe players don't actually need this kind of positioning to be effective playmakers?)
And 2) wasn't there some work done in the FM demo tactics thread where people suggested that tempo and CF should be set to the same (or at least, very similar) places on the slider? Like slow tempo and low CF worked well, as did high CF and a quick tempo, but things weren't as pretty when you went some combo of high/low. Is that still considered correct, or has it been adjusted/debunked?

Personally I'm not sure that people should correlate tempo and cf and oversimplify things to the extent that tempo = CF. That would imply that with high tempo you should also have high CF. I would think that if you were to increase tempo..which would increase the rate at which passes are made and you increased CF, then you also would increase the no of bad passes.
Low tempo will work well with low cf..and its not because the two are co-related but basically because of what each means and does. Low tempo suggests you patiently build things up and with low cf you wouldn't have Joe Hollywoods in the team. Some people , including myself have had success with high tempo, short passing and high closing down with everyone on low CF.
That's what I believe, i just want to know what everyone else thinks. Cos when the patch comes out, there will be changes. For one thing mentality and its effects on positional changes within a formation are going to be more noticeable.

You would have thought this would be normal for a team of this power, but i got anoyed with there crap performances and removed there freedom in anger, much to my suprise they played a lot better the wingers actully dribbled passed defenders more, the strikers went for goal and the hole group attacked with more intent.
So i think where only suppose to apply cf to maybe 1 or 2 key players, Now i have the 2 strikers on (cf-7) the 2 wingers on (cf-10) and Emre is the only guy on 'much' (cf-14) as hes my playmaker, i notice he now sits back while the others go down the wings and if the move isnt on they use him to start another move.
As for high tempo making them move the ball around quicker, i dont think this is right, ok it gets the ball from defence to attack faster but its very easy to predict, if you want a fast tempo thats hard to defend and brake up you want to do slow tempo with short 1 touch passing, i've just gone to slow tempo and short passing though out the team with newcastle and having 75% passing completion plus more possession then the other side in most games, but at times is hard to find the ball because its pinging around so fast, so in my eyes this isnt down to high-tempo.
Would be interesting to try out high tempo with more creative freedom, i cant help but think you would need some awsome players with good dicsion stats to be able to play with that kinda football, 1 guy springs to mind D.Beckham he likes to do high cf high tempo passes.
