Sourrounded by top class players - Giggs, Ribery, Scholes, Carrick, Ronaldo, and Saha - my Wayne Rooney underperforms quite badly for me in terms of player rating. Can anyone advise on a particular player instructions that can fit well with his playing style?

He would sometimes go out and get 2 goals, but many times he would be on rating of 5 at half time. I would tell him there is no pressure on him, and he would finish the game with 7 or 8.

But i'm getting tired of having to motivate him to play better. If his playing instructions suited his style, I feel he should do well without my motivation skills.

At the moment I ask him to play with attacking mentality, short passing, little creativity, high closing down, frequent forward runs, frequent run with the ball, no through ball, no long shots, no crossing.

I think that's pretty standard for a forward because Saha, his playing partner, plays with the same instructions and yet seem to be quite comfortable with it. I sometimes replace Rooney with Ronaldo up front and Ronaldo performs very well under this instruction.

Is there something i'm doing wrong? I tried to use him as a target man, but he never wins any 50-50 challenges when the balls go to him. He rarely gets to any crosses made to him. He would only score when he beats 1-2 players by himself. No proper team work, no nice 1-2 with anyone.

The funny thing is, he gives out a lot of assists, 10 assists in 25 games, 12 goals in 25 games, but he does not play well throughout the game and it hurts the bottom line.. in games he cannot find a goal or make an effective assist, i lose the game since it's like playing with just one effective forward. Even when he's playing at rating 5 i insist on keeping him in case he does his magic late on.

any ideas on a good instructions setting for him?

I forgot to mention.. I'm 3rd in the league, 11 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss. Arsenal and Chelsea in my game are tough teams.

Suddenly my team is hitting a rough patch, led by the off form Wayne Rooney.. now that he doesn't score, i lose games that i should easily win..

No,just kidding.In the last fm he used to underperform too,but scored a lot of goals.He will get better(and injured ).

Errrrrrh, you are using Rooney with no through balls, no longshots and no crossing - and LITTLE creativity? Have you seen Rooney play IRL?
Anyways apart from that, i think you need to either use two strikers or use him as a supportman or winger. :thup:

Not that i didn't try all that. I changed his instructions around a few times over the season but nothing seemed to work. I tried to give him a lot of creativity, he just never positioned himself well to get on the balls. I tried him running with the ball and he just forgot he had 10 other teammates on the pitch (5-6 passes a game).

Have you tried setting Saha up as a target man with the "hold up ball box" ticked. Then give Rooney a more attacking mentality than Saha by two notches. Other sliders in the middle.

I just tried two quick matches as Man Untited with these settings and he bagged a goal in one and got a 7 and 8 rating.

Third game I used Smith as Target man with Target man aim set for head and he got 2. I still lost, drew and won one game each.

Off to work now, but let me know if this works.

Put Rooney in behind Saha so your using him as an attacking midfielder. Set him farrows and give him creative freedom and a free role. He will start to get around the pitch more and his performances will improve.

Also, you could try having Rooney with a Side arrow to the wings, I use this after half time and him and Ronaldo control the right side.

Long shots, forward runs, high creativity freedom and maximum attack mentality. Play off Pazzini or Alan Smith.

thanks for all the ideas.. rooney just got injured for a month, so i won't know for a while what's going to happen since i only get to play a couple of matches a day.

i might be trying to sell him in the january market to see how much i can get!

If you can get his rating up, Cheski will offer you loadsa money. They are afer him in my career game and I have heard the sum 80 million banded around, but Sir Alex has said sod off.
80million, he could buy my whole birmingham squad for that and still have change.
