It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default 4-2-3-1 Playball

As everyone else, I too, am looking forward to the new patch (hoping it would patch me up too!!!). But in the mean time why not have some fun with what we have, so here is a little contribution without promising to much (Ai will do it's best to make it very difficult, but who doesn't know that?!). Now I don´t claim that I have invented these tactics, I have simply brought together info that I have attrived on this forum, and as I have been playing I've based the success not so much on winning but in match stats Passing%, Crossing%, Tacking%, shots on goal, ect... Because if my team controls these aspects in the majority of games then I should do better than worse, in theory but I can´t prove this...(Ai x-factor). So I have only posted this for some of those that would simply like to try something else than the usual 4-4-2 direction this pre-patch forum has taken, and all input will of course be appreciated because I´d like to think that things can get even better...

Description: Flat four back, two MCs, One AMC, AML and AMR, and one striker (see:Barca tactics)

Now to the team:
Attacking:
Passing short(6), Tempo slow(6), Wide(15), Closing down often(15), Time wasting rare(6),
D-line(10).
Counter attacking:
Passing Mixed(10), Tempo quick(15), Narrow(6),
Closing down often(15), Time wasting often(15),
D-line(7). And tick the counter-box.

I have also made an ultra-deffensive and an Ultra-offensive tactic and they are of course tweaked differntly to inforce the gameplan, but I will have to put these on papir later...

But how will this work for you? I am Norwich (they have the team for the tactic+ a few buys) and am having fun, which is the point of this read...

Next time use [Code] for tables makes it easier to read.

The backline looks fairly solid defensively, looks like you've set a fairly deep dline..should be just touching the lowest notch of normal..methinks your fullbacks will be required to pass the ball well.

You'll need to progress with this tactic more and let people know how you do, how does this work for you for example? How do you play your lone gunman upfont?

First of all thanks for editing the post. This is all a new experience for me...

This is just, I would say, a "base" for 4-2-3-1. My experience is that the progess or de-progress of this tactic highly depends on your players and their strenths. For example you mentioned full backs and short passing, if you are not cofident in your full backs passing abillity change it to direct(15) and for the rest of the team to direct(12). I always do this anyway when playing in miserable weather conditions or a showdown with an overpowering opponent. The striker issue has a lot possibilities... if for example you were Barca and had Etoo up front I definatly would go with Play With Target Man and have the likes of Ronaldinho, Messi and Deco pouring in passes for Etoo to run on to. But this is a personal touch and I only find these to be effective when having execptional players. For instance at norwich my striker is small and not that strong so if I have him hold up on ball it will effect my game plan in a negative sense because he is not strong enough and result in losing a lot of balls...(not that he had any to start with) But jokes aside I would have to work on getting a strong striker to hold up on ball, but generally my fealing toward gunmen can depend on your game plan, like a fast striker that can run from a pressing apponent and you are counter attacking, or a stong Striker that can get to some chances in a game where your team are pressing for a goal. For the last point regarding d-line is that through testing counter attacking with a lower d-line works better, although if you go down to a deep d-line(6) it surrenders too much possesion, but this is a hard issue but I definatly feel this way. I only do this when playing ultra-deffensive or really low quality teams, and pulling back the three midfielders in the center of the field so the tactics look more like the deffesive 4-3-3 tactic. Pushing up the deffense definatly needs good speedy center backs or you are playing poor opposition, and even then this is a risky deal... I only push up (max 14 on the slider) with high quality players and playing the ultra offensive tactic of 4-2-3-1.

I have your wolverine tactic and have enjoyed it, so thank you for your time.

I noticed that I didn´t mention how things are going and how it works for me. So here I will explain what I did in my last two games with Norwich, home against Crystal Palace and away to Sunderland.

First home to Crystal Palace: first of all I keep the individual settings from earlier in the page. But I am home and want to go for the win. So in team instructions I bring the slider on passing to short(6) (to make sure I know we are short passing), tempo slow(6) wide(15) closing down often(15) time wasting rare(6) and put my d-line to(10). Nothing else on team, but remembering my full back on mix FwRuns I let him cross from deep. Now another important thing is the Goal Keeper. My aim for the game is short passing possesion, so my goalie will distribute ball to deffender collect. This gives undoubtibly more possesion for the team.

Norwich - Crystal Palace 4-1
20 shots 4
11 on target 3
9 off target 1
56% possesion 46%
74% pass complete 64%
26% cross complete 10%
68% tackles won 58%
50% headers won 62&

Now to the away game to Sunderland. I away from home and playing on paper a stronger opponent. Now again I hold same individual settings but change team instructions. Passing mixed(10) tempo quick(15), narrow(6), closing down(15) and bring the d-line to(7). Also remember to click the counter attack box. My full backs again will be crossing from deep, and this time since we on the break my Goal keeper will distribute to quick throw enforcing the counter attack.

Sunderland - Norwich 2 - 2
9 shots 22
8 on target 10
1 off target 12
50% possesion 50%
72% pass complete 70%
22% cross complete 46%
80% tackles won 80%
56% headers won 52%

I am quite satisfied with the results even though I should have won against Sunderland but my left back Drury made a nightmare backpass in the last 10 mins which earned him a 4. Issues like wingers crossing from byline and even swaping positions are things I try out if things are not going after plan and of course lots to do with the opponents capabilities.
