Unbelievable, unbefreakinlievable. I am at a loss for words, seriously. This game is so ridiculously hard, it's not even funny. I dont get it and I feel like banging my head against the wall until I pass out. I felt this way with FM2006 for a long time until by some miracle I had 2 major successes. The first one was with Crystal Palace where I won the FA Cup and got promoted with over 100 points in the same season. The second success was with a highly unfancied Hertha Berlin where I won the Bundesliga and Ligapokal. I honestly dont know how I got those two successes but lets focus on my current problem.
Now, I'm playing with Spurs because they have such a richly talented team, yet they haven't really won anything so theres still a challenge. I want to be able to play a controlled, passing game where I dominate possession. After having read a few of the brilliant threads made by people such as Cleon and rashidi etc, though, I realised that I couldn't play that way because I didn't have the players to do that. The only players really capable of consistantly playing good passes on the team are Zokora and Malbranque because of their good passing and the right mental stats.
I've tried playing this:
Defoe Berbatov Silva Jenas Zokora Lennon Baines King Dawson Chimbonda Robinson

To no avail. I realise that the team cant play quick one touch football because not everyone has the right mental(anticipation, composure) and technical stats, so I try slow tempo and mixed passing for those who dont have the best mental and technical stats for quick pass and move football. The team keeps the ball a bit better but creates NADA. Ok, I try quick tempo and the same type of passing...NADA. I try quick tempo and short passing, NADA. No matter what passing/mentality combos I try, the same thing seems to happen. My team appears to be choked. Lennon cant move one inch without getting tackled. Same with Silva, same with any of my strikers. All my attacking threats are snuffed out, and what get s me so mad is the ease with which they are snuffed out. Players like phil neville EASILY snuff out people like Lennon, who in real life sliced through teams like Chelsea with ease.
I've tried 4-3-3's, 4-1-2-2-1 I've tried at all and absolutely, NOTHING WORKS and it makes me sick. I shouldn't be a newbie because I've been playing the Football Manager series since like cm 00/01 yet I feel like an idiot, because ever since FM2006, I've been lost tactically, while everyone else whizzes by in the fast lane, inventing all kinds of exotic tactics and actually having a good time. I think it's because I dont understand the team and player instructions at all. For example, since I want lennon to do what he does in real life and take on players, I put him on a mentality of about 15, with about the same creative freedom, mixed crossing, forward runs often, run with ball often. Is that about right? Or does that sum up my cluelessness when it comes to this game? Is it because Lennon and Silva are 5'6 and 5'7 respectively and not some 7 foot oafs?
All I want to do is be able to create a good amount of chances, and score a good amount of goals. Right now the team is absolutely struggling to create ANYTHING. This is my squad:
manufan: I hate to sound thick, but your best chance of getting real answers that can actually help is if you are more specific about exactly what you need help with. I saw at least three things that you were pulling your hair out over (can't do controlled passing game where you dominate possession; can't create anything; Lennon doesn't run at people properly). These are three different problems with three different answers.
As far as the first step in getting help goes, the best approach is to specify for the board (this one, not the one in the game) the settings you usually employ for your team. That includes the settings that may seem irrelevent, like d-line, width, and time wasting as well as individual settings. They all can have a strong impact on how your team plays. On the other hand, it is mostly irrelevent who the players are, so you don't need to run down the roster. A good tactical strategy won't break down if you sub Modric for Jenas, and if you need advice about the best lineups for Spurs there's a more appropriate forum for that.
Anyway, without a specific diagnostic on your settings, we can only guess at the problem. Your settings for Lennon look within the realm of reason, so it may be that in the contect of the rest of your offense (i.e., maybe other teammates don't go forward with him and support his advances?) things break down. OTOH, I generally don't give a lot of CF to wingers -- it's just the two forwards and the more offensive minded MC that get it in my games. Maybe by giving Lennon the opportunity to let his creative instincts overrule your instructions, he is not doing enough of what you are trying to tell him to do. So maybe try dropping his CF to 10 or lower and see if that improves his play.
As for the offense in general, I haven't played enough 07 to know what works best, but your offense may be able to do with some more width and more CF up front. If your forwards have more space to run around in, it may help them get into good positions for chances on net. Also, if your fullbacks aren't involved, it may do to get them forward in support some more. Or maybe you need to sit back, play defensive, and use speed up front to hit teams on the counter. Etc., etc.
Anyway, like I said, the better we understand your specific problem, the better the advice you'll get. Plenty of people on here are good at this sort of thing, and are willing to help out. Use them wisely. Also, it doesn't hurt, ever, to see if nuts and bolts tactics threads like wwfan's TT&F07 can help.

bflaff is spot on. Let us know what system you're using, as exactly as possible (screenshots work well for this).
As to your general feeling of tactical helplessness, you are not alone. I've ranted about it in 2006, and may do so again for 2007. There's too much guesswork in the interface, and I feel you are perfectly right to complain.
To be blunt, you won't find such sympathies among the 'experts' who make assumptions and give advice as if it were fact. I enjoy wwfan's writing style and theory as much as anyone, but advise you to take the theories for what they are: theories, not facts, ideas rather than descriptions.
On the other hand, I have had a lot of success so far with FM2006 and 7, and I've often thought about trying Spurs for the same reasons you cited. If I do, I'll be sure to let you know what has worked for me (or not).
As bflaff points out, the good player and team forum has specific threads for each popular team. You'll find lots of advice in that thread, and it may be the best place to talk about tactics as well in this case. If you find a system that works for you, let us know.
Things to keep in mind with FM06/07, that may not have been taken into consideration:
1. CF is to be used sparingly (hints and tips).
2. Teams take time to gel. Makes a huge difference.
3. Teamtalks play a massive role and need to be mastered to get something out of your players.
4. FM07 is getting a patch soon that may change many things.
5. Tactics also take time to gel.
Granted, these things add to the problem of determining what you're doing right or wrong (in terms of how long it takes to tell), but a tactic should be tried for as long as you have patience.

I´m no tactical wonderkid, but I have a 4-4-2 tactic designed for Spurs, with which I finished 2nd in the league and won the UEFA cup.
I´ve also tested it with At. Madrid and so far I´m on top of the league.
I´ve tried a few of the 4-4-2´s around here and my tactic is a mix of some of them, so credit goes to those who have uploaded their tactics for the rest of us to use.
I haven´t uploaded mine, but will be happy to email it to you, if you want to try it out.
Disclaimer: It´s no supertactic that wins you all games!

Well I suppose I'm in as good as position as anyone on here to offer you advice on Spurs as I've just done the treble with them 1st season.
This was pretty much the team that did it for me most often:

<---Mido Defoe---> Alex Jenas Zokora HuddlestoneEkotto King Dawson Chimbonda

Now that was as solid as a rock as you can see in the screenshot above, goalscoring though a bit of a problem.
I never once started a match with the Tempo set to Slow/Fast or Passing set to Short/Direct etc, everything was a couple of notches above or below centre, still in Mixed obviously with exception of Width which I liked to set to Wide at home or against a team that played with high wide men. So what I'm trying to say is keep it simple, don't restrict them to a Short slow game or the opposite.
The reason I went with this formation is the exact reason you are struggling with Lennon and other wingers, it's because the match engine at the minute simply doesn't play them correctly. There's a point in the patch fix-list that refers to wingers dribbling so I'm hoping this will sort this problem out.
As the other guys have said already though, other than the dribbling problem of the wingers what are you having specific problems with? I can offer you advice on which players did well for me and the team instructions my lot played to but apart from that it's a bit difficult to offer much more advice.
(P.S. Tom Huddlestone is superb  )

No, with the setup the way it was it wasn't necessary as the fullbacks weren't very attacking and I didn't have any wingers in front to cover that part of the pitch.
