depends on the team
after i get a squad i like, i dont buy players, where a lot of people would continue to stock up on class players.

i like to get a solid 16 man squad, and just let them go. youth for injuries.

What kind of boring, boring person doesn't want to sign anyone. i once tried it with Aston Villa, to see if I could do a Martin O Neill. it was probably the dullest thing you could do. The tactics were so pragmatic and tailored to cancelling out the opposition to counter how turgid my own team was.

As I see it, the best thing about this game is the ability to turn around the fortunes of teams by buying better players. I love turfing out rubbish. I love getting £2 million for a donkey like John Carew and spending it on someone better, who costs less.

The greatest manager this country has seen, Brian Clough, revelled in transfer dealing. As he said "it is players who win football matches, not managers". Besides, half the fun of transfers is in the looking. How good does it feel to buy a striker and watch them score on their debut.

I think that trying to play the game without making transfers is basically not playing the game to its full potential.

I've been thinking about this a bit more and it seems even more crazy. Unless you're starting as a team with an excellent chance of winning the league (top 4, plus maybe Spurs)then surely all you are looking to do is improve the status quo slightly. Your training and tactics can only go so far. If you have Carlos Bocanegra up against Didier Drogba, you are not going to win the league, full stop. The point of the game is to try and improve a team and the best way to do that is to be shrewd in the transfer market.

I do not like signing proven talent. I will put off signing someone to be an immediate fix only until after I have the other fellows on the club a shot to get the job done.

Almost all of my signings are you players who the scouts have pegged on developing into stars down the road. I usually cap players I scout to be no older than 25, but on the rare occasion where no one on the squad could do the job required, I went out a signed a guy older just to fix it.

Bingo.

I'd kill my team if I had to deal with crap youngsters and reserve players. I always look for bargain deals and try to bring in better players for the positions I'm weakest in. That's the point of the transfer kitty.

And I completely agree about watching your newly bought player have a superb debut, esp a striker that gets a hat-trick on his debut against a rival. Ah, the good old Matias Fernandez days.

I rarely buy anyone over 25 and mostly under 21. I know they should be at their peak at about 26-29 but they have a functional age from much earlier so you might as well get them before their peak.

After my first season the transfer frenzy generally dies off and I'll bring in maybe 2 or three big signings and then after that it becomes a case of replacing the weakest member of your first team squad. But starting out, I love to bring in as much talent, for as little as possible.

I do enjoy buying a lot of players, but they're what you would call squad players, eg. if I'm in the Premiership it's very unusual that I buy players that are worth more than 3-4 M at the most, and usually my transfer fees are in the 1-2 M area. My good players are usually players I've bought "Wenger-style". So I usually snap up a lot of promising 16-year olds and that's how I build a winning squad...

hmmm i buy but not much. I have only bought 3 players for Torino in my current game. 2 GK's and a AM/S

Got in 2 loans and got that CSKA DC signed free. I try not to get too much in, work out the weakest players and sort it in Jan. Although if i have utter crap in certin positions well then i have to buy!
