All,

If a player has been injured what is the best way to get him match fit...?

give him matches! sometimes you can arrange friendlies and play him along with other reserve players - you can put him in the reserves also but I find that the reserves hardly have any matches (in english leagues)...

1. Intensive physical training - but don't forget and leave him on that indefinitely!

2. Matches.

For #2, I'll usually start with 45 minutes in a Reserve match (assuming a Reserve league) or 10-15 minutes off the bench if no Reserves are available. Then build time: 60 minutes, 75 minutes, 90 minutes tends to be a pretty good pattern. If you have to start him with competitive football, its probably something more like 10 minutes, 25-30 minutes, 55 minutes (let him just start to get into the second half), 65-70 minutes, 75-80 minutes, 90 minutes.
