Hazarding a guess though regarding the realism of the gate receipts and crowds, you only have to look back to the 70's when they dropped a division. They were still getting some of the highest crowds in the country.
Same could be said to some extent for Man City and Leeds Utd, who also both have a strong following and their gates did'nt drop much.
I imagine you would see the same thing of any "big" club in the same sort of circumstances really.

My knowledge goes back to about 2002, so I'm possibly talking even more rubbish. Although, from the coverage that Leeds get at the moment, despite being a League One team, I can understand the continued support.
