I'm very confused, playing as York in league 2 most of my players (defenders + midfielders) are set on direct passing however if I put direct passing on the overall team instructions I get hammered, however if i set it to 1 slider abover short (mixed) then I seem to play well and win most games. How can this be when you are telling most of your players to play direct football?????
From my experience you need a high quality players to play direct passing game. Since youre in league 2 short passing would be the best option but leave defenders on direct as you dont want them dwelling on the ball
if your srikers are playing direct they will be going for killer balls and giving it away most of the time and lettin the opposition start lots of new attacks.
Does this mean though i can't play high tempo cause the manual states short passing is better suited to slow build up, don't see that in league 2 these days!!!!
the manual is just a guide ( although useful) i would probably play a fairly high tempo at lower level. You can play high tempo with short passing but if youre worried play mixed passing.

No you don't, direct and long passing are for poor passes of the ball.
playing short passing, makes things complicated this is because its virtually build up play, and therefore if a pass to an open person isnt on he will play a pass that is impossible and therefore lose possesion this play is seen at the top of football, teams such as man united, chelsea etc...However you do not see this as much in the champion and lower leagues, they tend to play more direct passes therefore instead of build up play they are playing as fast as they can to get the ball to the striker this play is not complicated but doesnt fool the opposition as much as short passing would, the more short you go like 1,2,3 slider then the more 1 touch passes you get such as one 2's this is the kind of play ud see barcelona play rather than a bottom team in league 2...Anyway i hope this makes sense, atleast some sense...
cleon i agree with you generally but surely strikers set to direct are going to look for defence splitting passes and give the ball away alot. Please respond if you disagree.

I don't know how you got your strike force set up, but my strikers recieve the ball and hardly ever pass it. Their job is to put away the passes they recieve and not create chances for others.
Direct passing isn't looking for that killer ball btw, its just means when you get the ball they will look to move it forward.
