I've got problems with my Newcastle team when playing away. At home i'm unbeatable (almost win everything, only 2 draws against Chelsea and Tottenham) and i often win 3-0 or more (Arsenal 4-0, Man Utd 4-1, Liverpool 4-1 and 3-0).
I'm currently second in my second season (after 26 games). I waste my points when i play away. Have lost six away games, not with 1-0 or 2-1 but with 3-0 or 3-1. When i get behind i almost never win an away game. I would like to ask you guys how you get succesfull in away matches. I play a flat 4-4-2.
I would start by playing more defensively. Try playing a lone striker with 5 in midfield and see what happens. Consider playing a holding midfielder just in front of the back 4.
Don't have players making as many forward runs as you would at home.
Also, if you have pacey players in forward positions play a counter-attacking style so you can move the ball quickly and punish them on the break when their attacks break down.
Look at the types of goals you are conceding, are they getting in behind your defence, are you being beaten in the air? You have to find the weakness before you can counteract it.
In short, if my team are the underdogs (especially if I am away) I set the team out defensively. The game plan being keep it tight, hit them on the break.
I only play my home tactics away against far inferior opposition.
hi everyone, another thing that i have used away from home is barrows for my wingers that way you have an extra man helping the full backs. Have one MC with a farrow to support the strikers. use the long ball system with counter on. hope that helps a bit mate.
