I just thought i'd add an update from using this tactic.
I'm playing as northampton and i got them to the championship playing with a pretty basic 4-4-2 tactic, but i was finding that i needed something with a bit more kick. So not being very good at creating tactics, i had a look around the forums and decided to give this one a go as i like the balance of 4-4-2 opposed to all those other weird 3-1-3-1-2 or similar tactics!! with a 4-4-2 it's easy to maintain a team as you need less players to cover all positions...
Anyway! with the tactic i finished 2nd in the championship that season whereas i'd probably have struggled to make mid-table.
I'm in the
prem now, and after 4 seasons with this tactic, i'm sitting in 4th place behind chelsea, arsenal & spurs. they have completely dominated the league over the years acquiring every decent player possible!
So here are some things that i have noticed and overcome with this tactic:
1) you must have good wingers and they must be a natural in the position that you play them and use the correct foot for there side of the pitch. i.e. ML & AML left boot or MR & AMR right boot. I've currently got Rubio & Magnor playing here and they do really well.
2) You will let in a lot of goals unless you look after your defence.. If your like me and adopt the kevin keegan approach of football management, you completely spank all of your transfer budget on top midfielders & strikers, leaving your defance rather neglected. Over the last two seasons, i have invested heavily in getting in some good defenders and they are paying dividends. Look for the attribs that Flab stated at the start of this topic. I personally try and go for wingbacks as they seem better at going forward. I have Crainey, Hofland, Fitz Hall & Srna (with nicky hunt as backup).
3) for your strikers you just need some strong, fast players that can score! I normally keep an eye on the leading scorers from the championship and buy them in the summer. I've Vaz Tae and Babel who are proving a lethal duo.
4) i haven't really found the formula for good midfielders yet. i've cardenas and ponzio playing there and they seem to be doing a good job. Ponzio topped my goal scoring charts last year from all those corners! and had about 10+ assists so ensure one player has awesome long shots capablities.
5) goalkeeper. Well goes without saying. buy the best that you can physically afford and attract. agility, balance are key stats along with the normal goalie stats. Itandje is doing a good job between the sticks for me. he cost me my complete budget one season, but worth every penny.
I still let in more goals than anyone else in the top half of the division, but i score more than anyone else in the league.
So as you can see, you don't need a top team with this tactic. I can hold my own against the big boys and sometimes beat them. Last night i beat chelsea in the league cup final which is my first major cup win for Northampton so i was well pleased with that. Just waiting now to get enough rep to start atracting the really big players..
Many thanks Flabarama... this is a really good tactic and if you do buy the right players, i think it will work at any level.
Sorry about the lack of pictures, but I want to get back to the game!
