Friendly matches are really the only acceptable way to gain match fitness when not playing competatively, simply because you'll at least get a proper game. Playing against players from your own club isn't quite the same.

I've never understood why this is so strictly implemented in FM, though it seems better in FM07 than 06. Certainly
some players won't be able to keep sharp without regular competitive games, but should do fine with practice matches.
The idea that being match-sharp is the same as match-fit seems utterly wrong to me. Being able to go 90+ minutes is something for semi-pro teams to worry about, not full-timers. Any pro athlete should be able to go 90+ barring injury.
