Would be useful if you told us which club and how much you're looking to spend ("not much" is pretty vague). Also, what season? AND do you want a first-teamer or someone as 2nd choice.
Get Justin Hoyte mate. He's ideal for you. Quick, good tackler, good marker, reasonable going forward and most importantly would be available in that budget. If not, then get him on loan for the season. He'll do well trust. Playing with Arsenal, I had Eboue & Sagna both out at the same time for 6 & 2 months respectively. Hoyte did extremely well in their absence even playing in the CL finals and neutralising Silva completely.
You could try Alan Hutton from Rangers as well but might cost more than 4M. Nedum Onuoha from Man City is a possibility. I picked him up for 5M in season 2. If you're lucky he'll be availabel cheapish in season 1 (never really tried in the first season so not sure).
tried Hoyte, he said a move to Villa would be a backward step in his career... strange,i thought rotting in the reserves would be worse, but you know, everyone to their own!
Ill try again, hes done very well for me on my Arsenal save.
Make a loan offer for Hoyte. I think he'll be happy to come on loan. Same for Onuoha. Might let him go. Not sure though.
You could sign Sergey Ignashevich for free and stick him there. He's pretty good at RB.
See how you can get either Phil Jagielka or Tony Hibbert for. Both of them are pretty good. Especially Hibbert. Guy Demel maybe? Oh, Mortiz Volz at Fulham is pretty good. Worth a shot I suppose.
