I've loved FM for years in it's many incarnations but this one is very close to going in the bin!! (I am using the second Beta Patch).

For 2007 I spent absolutely ages when I was off work with a broken leg designing two great tactics, a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3. They weren't killer tactics and I never won the League but it gave me a few decent seasons as the Hammers.

I saved them looking forward to using them in this game.. They are absolutely useless!! Players just hoof it, I'm conceding 4 or 5 goals a game and as I've mentioned before my defenders seem to sit down and have a picnic whilst opposition attackers just stroll through and score!!

So ok, I tried a few of the other tactics other people have made and even SI's implemented tactics. For me, useless again!

Penalties galore for the Opposition, my goals ruled out for offside, my keeper kicking it straight at the opposition striker, my defenders doing their statue impressions, and when they do close down they just meander around the back of the player they have closed down with no effort to make a tackle.

Defenders no longer head clear, they try to chest it down and lose it, and no matter what tactic I try my wingers and forwards seem to walk with the ball whilst dribbling whilst the opposition players have bursts of speed which take them delightfully past my ridiculously slow defenders.

And why is it no matter who the opposition is they zip the ball round beautifully, never misplacing a pass whilst my apes of players hoof it aimlessly back to the opposition no matter what instructions they are given.

Added to that the Match Engine flickers and stutters and every time I go and make a tactical change before I can hit a button the opposition score...

I haven't got a broken leg this year, I don't have hours and hours of time to design a tactic that will win just the one game. I'm four without a win and my job is already insecure??? Are Chairman really that harsh? The new rich Hammers owners only gave me 6 Million to spend, what's that all about??

Am I the only one frustrated with this game?

Not the first topic posted allong the same lines, wouldn't you be better to find one of the others and contribute to that, rather than start yet another, "I'll chuck it in the bin" topic.....

I'm starting to get a little frustrated about certain things (mainly my lower league game where I am convinced I'm not going to get a contract renewal even though I'm doing well), but not enough to make threads about it - I'm still enjoying the game enough to carry on playing it.

It was never going to as simple as just copying your FM07 tactics onto FM08, the match engine has been modified quite heavily and player movement adjusted so naturally these things will affect tactical approach.

My match engine flickers for 5-10 seconds after making a tactical change also, but I put it down to my current system being from the stoneage. Really looking forward to my new computer arriving.

I don't really have anything much else to say that hasn't been said before - other than if it's annoying you, give it a rest and wait for the patch to come out and see if that makes the game more enjoyable for you. If you still can't get on with it then you can always go back to FM07 and use a modified database (there are a couple around up to the end of the last transfer window) - some shops might offer trade-ins also, don't just throw it away - or if it would make you feel better I guess you could smash the disk to bits like some people have done :p

The main thing I have noticed is that closing down is severely punished, players with high work rates but low positioning stats chase the ball school boy style leaving space all over the pitch. Keep it at own half at most.

Some people are so darn helpfull aren't they?!

My point is that FM2007 started full of bugs but became a very good game. There were some great posts advising on tactics and some great tips. I'm not sure but I think it was WWFAN who advised on the tempo and passing settings complimenting eachother as a basis for a tactic, with my 2007 tactics being so bad that has totally gone out of the window now.

I think as you say Parmie the closing down has a lot to do with it. I think in 07 the options were "rarely, mixed and often" or something like that?? Now its "own area, own half, whole pitch" and that when used with an old tactic must mean that the closing down is totally different.

I just wished they left the original sliders alone so it was easier to work out. It's all very well making the game more in depth etc but for those of us who haven't got the time to be developing tactics left, right and centre it is very disheartening.

A few more "ranting" points, has anyone experienced these?

The game "criticises" my lack of Big Transfers?? Bit difficult when West Ham's new "Rich" owners only give me a budget of 6.5 million!

Robert Green collecting a pass back and miskicking it straight to Berbatov who scores!! Next game another pass back and this time it bounces off Green straight to Leroy Lita who scores!! This is the same Robert Green who has been outstanding in real life for the last 2 seasons!! Who does these stats?

Hammer Tottenham for 90 minutes but it stays 0-0 until the very last minute when Berbatov scores a late winner from Green's above **** up!

Away at Man Utd, and tight mark Rooney. That was worth it he nets a hat-trick in a 3-0 win for them!

Beat Reading 3-2 but it's awful so I tell the players it's dissapointing. Now I have 5 of the miffed with my Team Talks.

I really recommend another read of the tactics section , particulalrly around closing down, defending, and keep the team's shape.

I'm if you take this on board you will see some differences

This has irked me about FM08 as well. If anyone has an aswer to overcome it I'm all ears (or eyes as the case may be).
