While it is a realistic touch - as well as a reason to think more carefully about your purchases and wage offers - unfortunately the wages at some clubs in the game are ridiculously inflated.
West Ham's are about twice as much in FM as in real life - thus offloading some of the ageing players that you start with is doubly hard.
Middlesbro got relegated in my FM and two seasons later they still had players on over £40k/wk - and that's after the 25% pay cut.
They were refusing bids on these players too!
In fact it's common for the about-to-be-relegated AI teams to offer lucrative new deals to players whose contracts aren't even expiring.
These players usually snap up the new deals too - despite other clubs being interested in offering them continued top-flight football.
Yes this 'pay a % of the wages to leave' is a nice idea in theory, but FM's wages model needs improving first.
