I go through each player on my tactics and set them individually to different levels of closing down, passing etc.

Now, if I have done this, does closing down and passing style in team instructions have an effect or is this only if players instructions are set to team?

As cleon told me. try it and see

first off save your game, then goto a match set passing on the shortest option go into the match watch the players for 30 mins or so, then when your bored of the crap there doing go into the tactic and switch the passing to the other end of the scale, and determin if or not it did the damm bit of diffrence

If it totaly messed up your game, reload and then make your mind up from the conclusion you had from your test
