4-4-2 Magic box!! a formation for possesion football.
this is a formation in which everyone is set to the same mentality so they all play as one unit. i play a short passing game (slider all the way to the end) with slow tempo, play narrow, rarely closedown (except my fullbacks and wingers), zonal marking (tight for both centre back and central mids) team push up playing offside. for the individual settings, set goalkeeper to short distribution, fullbacks foward runs often and crossing often, centre backs all rarely, wingers forward runs often, run with ball often, long shots often, through ball often, crossing mixed or rarely (i'll explain later) central mids all rarely, one CF foward runs often and evrything else on mixed, and the other CF everything on mixed with hold up ball ticked. ok now to explain in more detail, the reason for these settings is that your full backs will push right up while your wingers will push in, your two central mids will guard your CBs. this has really worked for me, scored loads of goals and conceded very little but i think its worth mentioning that i am Man utd so for those managing "lesser teams" you may need to tweak the settings to suit your team. ive won four league titles in five years, won three in a row going unbeaten in one season, won champs league three times in five years. won three FA cups, two league cups, two club world champs. please note that THIS is the attacking version on this, i only use this playing at home, away its similar but i pull the attacking slider back to slightly above normal same as the defensive line slider because its important not to have one higher than the other as this formation is all about patient possesion football. try to have at least three different tactics for BOTH home and away games. after taking a lead push some sliders back so you dont concede straight away! and also push some sliders back further for the last 10-15 mins of games especially when you have a slender lead as the AI is likely to throw everything foward you hit them on counter attack. and do the same for away matches, i know i sounds like a lot of work but its worth it!! oh and by the way, you may need to tweak tactics when playing on terrible pitches and bad weather conditions as you will notice your players will give the ball away in dangerous areas leading veins popping out of your head! i cant download the tactics on here because i play the game on a different PC with no internet connection!

I play a short passing game (slider all the way to the end) with slow tempo, play narrow, rarely closedown (except my fullbacks and wingers), zonal marking (tight for both centre back and central mids) team push up playing offside.
For the individual settings:
Set goalkeeper to short distribution
Fullbacks forward runs often and crossing often
Centre backs all rarely
Wingers forward runs often, run with ball often, long shots often, through ball often, crossing mixed or rarely (I’ll explain later)
Central mids all rarely
One CF forward runs often and everything else on mixed
The other CF everything on mixed with hold up ball ticked.

Try to have at least three different tactics for BOTH home and away games.
After taking a lead push some sliders back so you don’t concede straight away! and also push some sliders back further for the last 10-15 mins of games especially when you have a slender lead as the AI is likely to throw everything forward you hit them on counter attack. seriously though, you say for lesser teams we might need to tweak it, what tweaks would you suggest?
just curious! cheers
depends what team you are. this formation is very similar to the juve of 3/4 years ago, solid but also very fluent. with lesser teams you may want to try mixed passing or increasing the slider so its closer to mixed but still short passing.
i wouldn't recommend standing off too much unless you have decent CBs and CMs, and also try not push too far up.
its really important your FBs and wingers close down often to force the opposition into playing loose passes so your CMs can regain possesion.

you can tweak it to suit your style of play, if you like playing with width you also do that, it gives greater attcking threat as your fullbacks will become more or less your second wingers but it does create big gaps in the middle which top teams can really exploit.
if you have to play wide, do it when you are a goal down or you need to score.
