It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

If you're actually going to create one, you can just put your results in here if you want.

I'm really interested to see you trying this. Like you, I've been impressed by the effectiveness of crossing and wide forwards and, after reading Rashidi's introduction to setting up a back three with a sweeper, I've been trying to find a successful way to combine the two. My approach has been somewhat similar, i.e. a wide 3-4-3.

I'm playing with a Conference North team, so obviously my players aren't that great. However, they're not bad for the division that they're in and they finished 3rd in the league the previous season. Results so far this season have been:

Played 17, Won 8, Drawn 5, Lost 4, 29 Goals, 18 Conceded

Typically, I've found that if I score first then I can run away with the match, but if I concede then it seems easy for the opposition to shut me out completely. This may well be due to my lack of skill at tactical adjustment though.

More interestingly, I've found a few concerns defensively with the back three. In particular, the DCs sit wide when I'm attacking, which is great because they make quite a few useful interceptions, but I find that when I start defending again the DC will tend to close down the wide player and double up marking with my ML/MR rather than coming back infield. This can leave my sweeper quite exposed at the back. I've also had problems with the opposition strikers sitting between my three defenders while I'm attacking and then running through the gap onto through balls on the counter attack - this is worse if my sweeper is sitting slightly deeper than the other DCs as it gives the two strikers a head-start!

I'll be really interested to hear whether you observe similar problems at the back and whether having the WBs encourages the DCs to stay in tighter. I'm also thinking of moving away from the trident formation up front to have two dedicated wingers - I'm not sure what effect this will have on my goalscoring though. I look forward to hearing your early conclusions.

Joris, do you use the 5-2-3 both home and away?

Apg26 - The problem you have, is resolved by the wingbaks. Like you said, you are vulnerable to counter-attacking, which is logical really. Your ML and MR have barrows, but they probably also have forward runs - often. When the opposition wins the ball in midfield, they're probably somewhere up the pitch, much too late to defend. I find the wingbacks to be very effective, defensive too. I've set them on cross from deep. The overlapping part seems to be going really well, they only do it when the opposition players are in their own half, when the risk isn't too big.

I have my wingbacks on high closing down, to make sure they do their defensive duties too. This makes sure that the DC's don't have to go al the way to the DL/DR position.

Now, I think your other problem, the one with the opposition strikers, stands apart from this one. What I did is give my DC's tight marking and high closing down, which kind of makes them man mark. My sweeper has low closing down, and really stays behind those DC's, picking up all trough balls.

I'll report back later with my detailed results. I can already say however, that I'm really excited about my defensive results so far!

Croguy - I do use it both home and away, yes. I also play wide both home and away, which I seem to get away with. I think this is because I'm not really vulnerable to counter attacks, because of my sweeper system. One of the reasons I love this system

joris: It looks like a system, which used Argentina under Bielsa before WC2002. They were so dominant in the Qualification. Verón dictating the play, Ortega and Piojo Lopez on the flanks and Crespo in the end of the crosses. Unfortunately in the WC the key men Verón wasn´t in a good form at all and Crespo in good form was on the bench, Bati in but not in a good form + other reasons, so Argentina failed badly in this WC. But I think this system has a lot of potential (with suitable players of course). Keep it up

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time at this time, so I'll keep my results short:

The first 10 matches were a great succes, and I was really excited. Then unfortunately the results got worse, losing 3 times in a row, getting knocked out of the champions league. However, with some tactical changes I got back on track and won the title in the last match of the season.

I am willing to upload my tactics, simply because I find it really hard to spot all bad things myself. Like I said: don't expect a great tactic that will win all matches for you yet. I have had mixed succes. However, I believe the potential is there. It will need some time to make this really good, because it hasn't been done before really.. If you look in the tactics & theorems thread, it's very easy to come up with a basic 4-4-2. With a 5-2-3, you have to start from scratch really, therefore I could use some help

Sounds very stupid, but what's the easiest way to upload my tactics?
