yeah i have the same question, i got him for free in 2010 for my rangers side.
I'm alternating between him and Jose Sosa in the hole or attacking midfielder position with him set as a playmaker, but sosa is widely outperforming him.
Use him with a target man, play VDV at AMC, he should feed off the targetman. Let him take the free kicks. Set his long shooting to halfway on slider. If he tries too many longshots early in a game and they miss, his form and confidence drops.
I use him with my Eddie Johnson Targetman tactic with Eddie and villa. VDV outscores Villa.
Pregame talk should be 'I have faith' to VDV. At halftime if team isnt performing you can say you are 'disappointed' and he will sometimes get inspired. You will be able to tell almost immediately, he will take a long shot..if it is on goal hes inspired, if he blasts it wide hes not.

Make him playmaker, let him take all the penalties/freekicks and corners. In my last game he scored a hattrick of 30 yarders and got 2 assists from corners.
I used him in the hole behind the strikers as playmaker with high creative freedom, make sure he's not in a free role as he doesn't play well with it on for some reason!
I found I got the best out of him in my Lazio game when I played him just off Bianchi who is used as a targetman. However is just as effective playing off two strikers or on the left wing
