Non-Contracts - surely these are completely wrong?
I have a player on non-contract that I want to get rid of.
He is a decent player but he's surplus and I need to cut his large wages.
His profile says he is contracted for the season (?) and he has no value.
I tried offering him a slightly reduced wage for the season - (contract better than non-contract?). He refused.
I have tried offering him to clubs for £1k, but there's no interest whatsoever.
(It's probably right that I can't sell a player not contracted to me though).
I considered terminating his contract - but it said I would have to pay £14k compensation (a season's worth!).
So I offered him mutual termination but he is unwilling to leave.
Surely he would prefer the security of a contract to a non-contract?
Isn't the point of non-contracts that the club or the player can part ways if either feel like it? No compensation.
I offered him to clubs for £0.
Suddenly huge interest (there had been not a flicker before).
He signed elsewhere for lower wages and his value instantly became £4k.
In FM we are screwed with non-contracted players - we can't terminate (properly) and we can't sell.
If he had been a rubbish player that no club had wanted I would have been stuck with him and his ridiculous salary.
So what's the point of non-contracts?

I think it means that he is under 18 (for a professional contract) and also he has signed a pre-contract with the coaching staff before you arrived (usually up to 3 years if they are a 16 year old).
This feature is a nightmare when you are taking over the lower level teams. I hate it frankly. Sometimes, I just take the hit on the termination so I can recapture his wage on the salary budget so I can find another player who plays for a pittance and actually makes my starting lineup.

It's nothing to do with age - it's a contract status I can set as a researcher. Being non-contract, they should be able to be released without compensation, or 'poached' with 7 days notice.

So the termination and mutual-compensation behaviors Half-time Orange described are broken, then?

Yep.
Basically, for Non Contract players, any club who wants to sign them can discuss terms at any time. Once agreed, they can then put in a '7 Day Letter' to their current club, informing them that they intend to move in 7 days time.
