what would you do when it says one of your players returned late for pre season?

Disipline him, I usually warn them or fine them a weeks wage.
It is usually a sign that the player is either a problem player or is unhappy at the club.
Look at his transfer and personal pages to see if you can identify the area of concern and what can be done to solve it.

If its his first offence then do nothing but keep an eye on him for any further indications of problems. In reality you would not expect to be given a fine for a first offence in real life
