Does "Rarely" really mean never? Assistance please!
I understand that the word "rarely" means infrequent, not very often. However, in the FM2007 manual it seems to mean not at all. Or does it? For instance.
Forward runs. Your player will stay back and not attempt to get forward.
Run with ball. Your player will refrain from dribbling with the ball.
Long shots. Your player will desist from taking long shots.
Through balls. Your player will refrain from playing through balls.
Now comes the contradiction.
Cross ball. Your player will not attempt many crosses with the ball. I understand the last of these to be correct. So, when I give "rarely" instructions, what are my players really doing?

Rarely means almost never, unless a really, really, really good chance arises.

Cleon, suffer an old man being somewhat pedantic. Do I now assume that the first four items in the FM2007 manual are either incorrect or errors, or is the last one the incorrect one?
Or, are they all, for the game purposes, correct, or similarly, for the game purposes, all wrong? Oh! poo!!! I'm sorry I started this! Kind regards.

I would agree with Cleon, but perhaps expand a little.
I've noticed this most with long shots. I set to rarely on all my players, yet my DM has chipped in with a few goals from deep this season (and many more have flown wide).
Similarly, my full backs are set to rarely once I take the lead, yet often are found supporting the wingers.
The question I asked my self (and shouted at my monitor) was "why"?
And then I cracked it. My tempo was usually quite high, causing my players to look for the quickest route to goal. Sometimes that involved a shot from 20 yards, or a darting run down the wings.
Rarely, as far as I can tell, means "never, unless that overides one of the other instructions or a good opportunity comes up". Thus my players on higher mentalities and high tempo were constantly searching for goal, even if that meant they had to shoot long or run forward.
That's how I see it (and use it) anyway. Most of my individual instructions are set to sometimes or never, yet that doesn't mean they won't (and that's a good thing).

Also creative freedom plays a part in overriding them as well.
