Default Cartoon question

Hi all....newbie here...I'm kinda still trying to figure out PhotoShop and was looking for advice on creating patterns. I recently drew up this cartoon and colored it using only PhotoShop. However although I used a stucco-like effect on the back wall I would much rather have had a wallpaper-like pattern there. Maybe some subtle stripes and such. Any ideas on how to layer in such an effect without tediously have to draw it in myself? In any case...here is the toon in question. Thanks!

Firstly, let me start off by welcoming you aboard here RackToon!
And secondly, let me say that I love your cartoon and I thank you for sharing your obvious talents with us! [righton]

As far as changing your background is concerned, the whole key here is to create and keep your background on a separate layer within Photoshop and, in this way, you can change it "at will"! If you are unfamilar with Photoshop's layering ability, don't hesitate to speak up and say so and one of us will be happy to quickly acquaint you with same.

In the meantime, enjoy your stay... stick around... play and learn with us all!

Nice toon [righton] ...and welcome from me

Try this, its how I make my selection channels.Make a new layer over top of the original, set the blend mode to softlight, next choose a hard edged brush and paint around the parts you dont want to be textured. When you have done that Cntrl click {PC}/Com click{Mac} the layer you have just painted, now you will have a selection active around your foreground characters, now go SELECTION > INVERSE,make a new layer and fill it with the texture you do want. With the selection still active go SELECTION > SAVE SELECTION,in the window which pops up name your selection BACKGROUND and click ok.If for any reason you lose your active selection you just COM/Cntrl the layer,or you can go to your channels palette and click on channels and within you will find a channel called BACKGROUND,just Com/Cntrl click this and your selection will be active once more when you exit the channels palette

I think the gradient wings will need redone though,I might be wrong.

Stu.

Thanks you all for the quick and warm response! You have quite the friendly staff here!

I think I may have come up with a solution of sorts. By using a pattern instead of a fill on the bottom layer and distorting it to follow the perspective of the room. Looks a little more like wallpaper now. I also threw in a transparent intermediate layer to sort of dim things in the background and help pop out the tooth fairy a little more. It's not the greatest wallpaper pattern in the store...but it's a start.

RackToon, I really like your work! You're right...the wallpaper looks much better with a cartoon than the texture does. I hope you hang around...we have all too few cartoonists, and they're always welcome!
