Default How do you guys manage your shortlist?

Being without money means that my scouts find quite a few players that I feel would make a significant earthshaking impact on my team, if only they'd be available for free.

Once upon a time I just looked at their contract (about to expire in 4 years), shrugged my shoulders and went on to the next find.

Then I moved on to the greedy way: I slapped every good player on my shortlist and waited, no matter how long, until their contract ran out to try and sign them. One major major drawback: after a few years, all their stats have been forgotten, so how can I be sure they are still good for our team?

So I added a feature: at the moment of discovery, I rate them out of 10 and enter that rate in the player note.

10 = must have
9 = almost must have
8 = not bad at all
7 = if there are no other options, he'll do

(somehow 6 to 1 never make it to the list, so I should rate them out of 4, I suppose, but a 4 doesn't have the same ring as a 10 )

But the problem now is, that even if a guy has a 10, I still can't be sure, because in the meanwhile we have been promoted and how would that guy do on our current dizzy high level?

It's hard being a manager

(Now lookee here. I'm not asking for tips or anything, just chatting about a game feature that interests me, OK?)

I have my best scout spend most of his time constantly looking at the players on the short list. As soon as a new player is suggested by another scout he gets onto the short list by clicking scout player so I'm getting a second opinion fairly quickly. I but each scouts opinion in the notes field folloowed by that scouts rating so it looks like "Fair(12-15) Good (8-6) Crap (20-20). At the end of each half season I will remark every player on the short list to be rescouted. If they never get an excellent then off they go. Whenever my shortlist gets over four scrrens I will look at the older players and their current contracts. If it doesn;t look like I have any chance of getting them before they retire then they are off. This means my shotlist is mainly players between 22 and 28. There are exceptions, of course, especially ones that might also make good coaches.

I shortlist all players rated excellent by my scouts, young players of the month and some of the guys who get MoM against us.

I keep an eye on their performances and make decisions to try to get them based on our need to fill certain positions in the Team or based on how well they've played for their own Teams...

...but mainly on cost.

I only have 00/01 so no player notes for me .

I have a bit of A4 paper on which I write the players name and the scouts opinion on him. If the opinion is good or I like the look of him he gets added to the shortlist. When I am in need of players I check shortlist (in position order) and cross reference what my scouts think of him. Also whenever another team bids or his contract is up, I make a judgement.
Sometimes there are players who I totally forget about as nothing happens to them (no messages) and so they stay on my shortlist for several years. Every so often I do a little spring cleaning and get rid of all the players I dont consider to be good enough for the club and the ones who I am unsure about get a rescout.

These kids nowadays don't realise how lucky they are. I remember when CM would only let you shortlist about 15 players, so anyone else you'd have to write down on a bit of paper.

I always get rid of people on my shortlist if their valuation goes beyond my budget.

I don't manage my shortlist, so after a couple of years I'm interested in most players

I usually realise that it's time to manage my shortlist when it ends up being longer than the Player Search/Interested filter!

I drop anyone over 30 not a goalkeeper from it. I also drop anyone who subsequent scouting shows to be less than 3 stars. Though I never add anyone who the scout didn't think was a 4 star player to begin with.

That said, my short list is never overly short.LOL.

Usually I only put the players rated as excellent on my shortlist - and only if their contract isn't running for more than 2 years.

If I have only one scout, I send him on Youth Search in the beginning of the year and let him scout the next opposition afterwars - Players with 5 stars get into the shortlist.

In the offseason I try to sign those players that are available on bosmans, interested in joining me, and not demanding too high wages - the others get either scouted again or deleted from the shortlist if there isn't enough time.
