Are you for "realism" or "fun"?-not a bitch thread
IMHO, fun is the way to go.
I just want to feel empowered and live out my impossible fantasies of being a tactical genius or legend.
The best ever FM player will never be half as good as the worst professional manager anyway, so realism is out for me. Many people ask for realism but how "realistic" is it for you average Joe to manager Barcelona or Manchester United?
I just want some good ol' innocent fun, not some frustrating challenge set to "ultra-hard".
Side note: If top managers like Fergie, Wenger and gang played FM08 do you think they can win easily?

My main gripe about every FM is the over-importance of tactics. If you put 4 good defenders, 2 good centre mids, two good wingers and a couple of good forwards out there in a 442 then they should do ok. But unless you spend hours poring over the Tactics forum (and that won't be enough tbh) then you won't have a hope in hell.

I should say that comment was directed at the ease of winning the Champions League with English teams. I find domestic challanges realistic but unfortunately the top sides from Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Portugal etc... are very under-rated.
Having said that I havn't played FM08 yet as i'm waiting for the patch so maybe I could be in for a plesant surprise?

This is exactly how I feel.

Fun should be a priority for any game, realism can never be achieved only be reached for. Realism is an outside variable, yet a game is inside your house in a programmed world. The game's purpose is to entertain people, therefore this is what it should do in the first place.

I'm not convinced 442 is always the way - However I do agree tactics is a heavy element but in real life managers do adjust tactics for each match, even matching up different players against oppposition
What has changed in recent times is the pick-up and play no longer works like it used to, it really takes some thought and care. I think this is where a lot FM'ers are struggling, especially new players
In answer to the initial post I tend toward the realism
