First season in League One I came 8th, I've just finished the second season and after promising promotion I just about managed it.
So now I face the daunting task of playing in the championship with not a huge amount of money available, top players leaving due to me being unable to meet their wage demands, and a stadium that is woefully under-qualified for Championship football.
(Withdean is approx 7000 capacity, I know that Falmer is on it's way so not so much of an issue, just got to wait out a season or so more!)
So any advice on buying, selling, loaning, tactics playing harder teams?
I play 3-4-1-2, 3 Centre backs, 2 wing Backs, 2 Central Mids going backwards, and a free role AMC behind two strikers. I am happy with this formation and it gives me a good balance that I want to continue with.
Do you have a parent club? If not, ask the board for one, get a bunch of loanees.
Good loans in general for Champ clubs:
Most fast Man U strikers score for fun in the Champ.
Matthew Connolly - rock at DC from Arsenal.
Mahon - RB from Boro.
Peters - fast, skillful AMRL from Ipswich (you might be able to buy him cheap too).
Cheap buys:
Terrell Forbes (excellent CB in Champ, but not so good in Prem).
Shane Sherrif - LB/CB, again cheap.
Paul Thirwell - sold DM, but again can't hack it in the Prem.
Marcus Hall - as others, cheap, not top class though.
Have the usual players like Stancu, Doudin, Torje, Piatti, Laurie della Valle, Danny Haynes been snapped up yet?
Will check my history with Leeds when I get home. I got some real bargains in the Champ.
Suggestion one - look for another position. With a promotion to your credit you could well wind up in a much better situation. However, if you don't want to do that...
Suggestion two - don't worry about your tactics until you get your roster settled. Concentrate on the middle positions first - GK, DC, DMC, AMC. Try to have pace at the back and good skills all through. Then, build out from the middle. If you don't have affiliations, make sure you have both parent and feeder clubs and use them, especially a parent. When you have the parent, aggressively pursue filling the gaps in your roster by loaning players. Even if the parent club doesn't send them to you on their own, offer to loan them at 0% salary, and the club will often agree (caution: player may not).
Hi mate, i kept thinking the same thing as I took Burton from the BSP to Premiership in consecutive seasons.
The way i done it is to constantly check foreign teams whos contracts are expiring as i've found some quality players by doing this. My stadium is not the biggest at 10,000 but im performing well in the league, sitting 10th after 3 months.
I've found a few players like this, aswel as from premiership teams.
A couple of months before the season ends, go into player search and look for all players who's contracts are nearing expiry.
That's my advice, plus what Jon said, get some quality loans in
Also, I have found that when looking at players, aside from the other attributes you look at, try to find players with high ratings for determination. It makes it easier to push them in competition.
look for a a player called Orlando who plays for Braga, i got him on a free before my Championship and he single-handedly took me up.
Just put the time in and spend half-hour/hour looking through some foreign teams (i checked all portuguese, italian and swedish teams) and its amazing what you can find
In response to Gunnerfan, I have about a 4 year plan with Brighton, I've got them up here and I want to make them a solid Championship team, then I'll be happy to move on.
One issue still with all these suggestions of loans and buys is wages and money. I only just squeezed into the Champ, 6th and got in through playoffs, and I was already a bit in debt at that point.
So what I'm looking for is a few more tips on money management.
And regarding my team, I have a solid WB L (Alan Sheehan), strong DMs (Cristian Bustos, Dean Hammond), GREAT AMC (Timon Van Leeuwen, 19 year old from Feyenoord, strongly recommend) and a good striker (Jake Robinson).
Those are the only definite names on my team sheet.
Regarding Della Valle etc, I haven't gone for 'all the usuals' in this game where possible, but I may look a couple up now that I NEED to find some quality.
Also go into player search and look for unattatched players and sort them by attributes for the position you need. I found a quality AMC (championship standard at the least) called James Dunne who was released by arsenal. Now worth £2.5m
Like i said, just spend a bit of time looking through teams, sorting them by value etc, its surprising what you can find.
I have built a team that is worthy of staying in the Premiership by doing this. I'm 2 million in debt but as long as i stay up, i'll be fine
