Default Developing youngsters and regens

I'm currently in 2013 and am trying to develop some quality young English players.

1) when i try to search, the custom filter option: 'Place of birth' doesn't seem to be working. You have to type something in and when I enter 'England' or 'Britain' and search nothing happens.

2) I have all 4 of my scouts out looking for talent (under 22 years of age). One is out looking for All Midfielders, one is on 'Strikers', one is on All Wingbacks and one is on goalkeepers. Every one comes back with 0 suggestions. Is this the regen issue some other threads refer to? Like 1 in 100 wonderkid type regens etc.

3) My youth intake is appalling, my assistant manager keeps telling me to offload as soon as possible.

So i'm developing a group of very mediocre future players indeed.

Suggestions?

1) I didn't know you could search by place of birth? How strange.

2) I'm not sure if these scouts are looking for players in particular, rather than looking at ALL players, and you filtering out everything.

3) Youth is generally poor. Just like in real life. Can't expect everyone to be brilliant. Personally, I'll get maybe 1 in 20 who is decent enough for me to keep for another year and see how he goes.

Place of Birth searches only towns and cities. I have a filter saved for Boston-born players, as I manage Boston United

Scouts rarely seem to find any U21 players unless they are already looking world class. I build my teams this way though but it takes time.

The best way I find is at the start of each season work through every single one of the top clubs having my scouts make report cards for all the Regens that have joined other teams.

If you go to the transfer history of a club you can select view in the top corner and select promoted youth players (shown here).

I usually do maybe 2 or 3 clubs a week through the season this way your not sitting for hours going over and over requesting reports and looking through them but it is better to do the top clubs as early as possible since you will be able to approach to sign the players before the club has had time to decide which they rate and offer them contracts.

There is generally one potential star promoted to the top teams accademy every season. Depending what level you manage at obviously determins how high you should aim when searching for these players.

I have managed to build world class teams for next to nothing using this method since you will only pay a limited amount of compensation.

Sorry for the double post, forgot to add that Regens for the most part seem to develop later than players available at the start of the game. Unless they are really bad I will keep them till they are around 22-24 to be sure I am not letting anybody go I might regret later.

1. Try searching by Nationality instead of Place of Birth

Think of this as a filter: you've instructed the scout not to tell you about anybody age 22 or older ... not explicitly "tell me about youth"

Also, where you send the scouts is going to make a difference. Obviously, if you send a scout to Cameroon looking for young Englishmen, he's going to come back with 0 players

This is most important when playing on a small database. For example, if I'm on a small-DB / English leagues only game, there may only be 20-40 Argentine players playing in Argentina. If I send a scout to Argentina, he's not going to come back with hundreds of targets (the way he would IRL) - there's a very limited pool for him to pick from, and some of those he's not going to rate as worth mentioning.

If I've then filtered his response - tell me only about left wingbacks - I'm very likely to have filtered the response down to zero players, because he won't tell me about the phenomenal 17-year-old striker he found. I told him not to!

If you're a "top team", that makes this even worse, as a player has to be even better for your scout to think that its worth mentioning him to you: the "cutoff" is very high, and most players in the game will be below it.

So, you want to make your filters as BROAD as possible: filter by age, but not position, for example. Increase the range, so say age <=24 instead of age < 21.

You may also be able to increase the area he's searching: if you're currently searching "Competition - English Premier League", try searching in "Nation - England". Even better, "Region - U.K. and Ireland".

Personally, I wade through plenty of useless recommendations to ensure that I don't "miss" a player.

Also, I watch my Under-18s, and scout anybody who plays well against them.

Lastly .. only 4 scouts? Will your board let you hire some more?

I think - at least on previous versions - "Determination" was a key stat for finding the most players. A high Determination scout will unearth more players than a low Determination scout even if they have all other attributes the same.

Ignore your assistant for now. Keep pushing the best of the lot, and don't give up on them too easily. Some of them pay develop reasonably well anyways. As you scout, find, and bring in more promising lights, push the weaker prospects out of the nest so that they aren't competing for playing time, coaching time, etc.

* * * *

One key question - which club are you?

I do a version of this by inviting all the youngsters from top teams to a trial. more accurate than scouting reports and doesnt waste my scouts time. the downside of course is that they may sign a contract in between the time you offer a trial and you actually get around to signing them. most of the time they dont though

Thats not fun, its not realistic and its a classic example of playing the FM fantasy game not the one you'd prefer.

I really wish scouting was worth bothering with..
