I'm in my 4th season with Newcastle, finished 6th, 3rd and 5th. I currently have a team that should compete for the title, but still i lose games like Reading away (i've got a far better player on every single position!). I play a flat 4-4-2 and i still wanna play that formation.
This is my team:

I'm sure I forgot some players, but ok, the first named players are my first 11. My defence and goalie are very good, and still i concede too many goals. At home I create too less chances (though I'm almost unbeatable at home) and away I don't seem to overcome when getting in behind. Even if the opposition attackers aren't good, my defenders make dumb mistakes. I feel I just can't compete for the title when I lose matches like Reading away or Charlton away.
My team instructions are all mixed (not all the same) and I use a targetman (Smith, Iversen, Ameobi).
Can someone help me to lose less games? Make my defence harder to beat?
The key here is to tweak ur tactics until ur team is playing smooth football.
I suggest you stop at a tough away game, then save. Now keep tweaking ur tactic and using "go on holiday" for 1 day option and reloading.
then check end of match stats each time, and watch extended highlights to identify the weakness in ur team.
I wouldnt regard this as cheating, u jus need to tweak until ur tactic is solid. Make sure instructions are all to ur players strengths and not weaknesses.
The first things you'd want to tweak are the individual mentalities and the Team Mentality, as it's very important and can change the way ur entire team performs.
...or just sign Greg Halford for £600k, stick him up front, set him as a target man and set target man supply "To Head". Seriouslly, it's all you need to do. Trust me.
Look in the post patch thread as their is some invaluable tactical advice regarding mentality and defensive lines. Read up and try to intergrate some ideas into your current tactics, because it could be just some small chanfes that could turn you into title challengers.
