updates become more of a story exercise, with each individual player and result being dissected, abit within the rules of the forum.

Well, since I don't do that (result dissections [kind of], individual player dissections), although my updates may be a bit longer than 'normal' at time, I take it I'm within your 'comfort zone'.
*Phew*
I think that as long as an end-of-the-year table is posted, I see no reason why anyone should complain, though. If someone just wants to see a small update, then they can skip all of the crap that surrounds it.
Other people, however, like to see a bit of description.

I'm hoping it's not me you're referring to, I don't think my updates are that long, but maybe I'm wrong. I try to just keep it to updating potentially big matches, etc. Though, maybe I feel this way because I've got a guilty conscience? lol
I agree that there's no need for a match by match synopsis, I don't read them anyway.

I am probably in the camp favouring short updates which help to spread the gospel of LLM in whatever league I am playing.
Bit I think we need to recognise that there is always going to be a subset of LLaMas who want to write longer updates and tell us how they are going in more detail, and who don't want to go to CMS and say I signed Jack Scully from Barnsford (one for Neighbours fans there ) and played him as a left sided sweeper because they believe in and follow the LLM ethos.
There is surely a happy medium somewhere in the middle, and you can always ignore the longer updates if you don't like reading them I guess. (That's what I tend to do, unless I really like it)
I think the style of LFCfan's World Relegation Tour which many of us have tried to follow is the happy medium. Updates regularly but usually only the brief details and giving some idea of your trials and tribulations and your love of the game rather than exact details.

It's not because of any space limit, it is more to do with the patience of the readers. Personally, I update during the season when a significant event has occurred, or at the end of the season.
If the update is more of a story, I am less inclined to read it. I prefer a brief synopsis of the season, plus an update on transfers and youth players.

Taips has got a very valid point. I've stopped reading half of the dross round here these days, not least because I haven't got a clue who half the people are anymore.

There are are a number of good updates on here at the moment that I am enjoying reading. However as pointed out by our aussie friend a few others are leaning towards stories. I myself may be partially guilty of this but it's only in the interest of creating an update people would want to read.
If I post simple stats my threads get less replies than if I go into a little more detail.
Maybe there is a danger of the updates getting more and more long winded but hopefully this thread will make people think twice about what they are posting. Ask yourself a few questions (I will be asking myself the same), Is it relevant to the update? Would you want to read the same?
Just my 2 pence worth.

Although I tend to write a bit more than most I stick to the following principles:
only update on a game I intend to persevere with - I like to have one long LLM career game per CM version, and that's the one I update on;
keep it fairly simple and report facts;
try and make it interesting, so rather than write 'we finished 12th' instead write 'we struggled early on, but my signing of a quality MC led to great improvements after the Xmas period and we steadily climbed the table to finish comfortably in midtable';
only report on matches that are of some genuine relevance or interest - a crucial league or cup game for example;
put in a bit of reflection about the problems facing the side, and the larger strategic picture and objectives;
from time to time summarize my career so readers can get up-to-date without reading the whole thread.

That's the way I try to write, and that's the kind of style I like to read as well.
Many of us like the 'traditional' update threads, where you merely get a league table posted, to see how that person is doing. Many others like some description as to how things are going behind that final league result. Giving some description also gives the read a more personal viewpoint of the career of the manager.
I, personally, don't see any threads that have become stories. There are some updates with some fairly descriptive detail (I think that mine is worse than many others), but the posters have limited the written text to what is relevant in the game, giving an overall view of some important happenings during the year.
Saying that, anything over that could be considered a 'pure footballing story' in CMS. What is meant by a 'pure footballing story' is that these are stories that are relevant to the actual game only, instead of a storyline or plot added. This usually includes monthly updates, match-by-match analysis, and analysis of each player, with extremely descriptive detail of other scenarios and minor happenings during the season.
Donners' story would be a very good example of what I just explained.
I don't think anyone has broken that barrier yet, from what I have seen.

I try to keep my updates short and sweet, i only usally update every season, or at a major event. (Like getting sacked for example)
There is i suppose one thing that can shorten the updates and thats a table, the table tells you whats going on better than the person does sometimes.

I agree with EssexMan and Comrade Raspberry. It is more fun and pleasure to read updates, that are a little more thrilling than just a league table. That is the kind of updates I am trying to write myself. I mean, everyone post a league table at least at the end of the season. So if you want to look only at the table, who is stopping you. You just scroll down and there you go! As for me, I like to read interesting updates, and am reading them almost every day. Actually they are responsible for me to start updating here.
As for non-update threads... What is there to discuss. The ethics discussions are prohibited, the advice for the "best" club always ends up with "Hey, check the Project X!", any other first timer will probably go home with "Check the FAQ!", etc.
Here is vote for more detailed updates ! And a beer of course !

There's no problems with the forum at all!
I think we all have to reside ourselves to the fact that there just isn't really anything left in CM3 to discuss. The only thing left is updates, long or short, one format or another it makes no difference. None of them are like CMS at all.
Stop picking holes in everything Taips!! |
