Actually, the NBA trading rules are a pain in the ass even in a game.
The total amount of salaries traded must not go over 10% for one team. In other words a team can only take on 10% more salary(in a trade) than it traded away. I'll fire up NBA2K3 and give you the exact number.
In the NFL- there is a team salary cap which teams must adhere to, so there is litte incentive to trade.
In MLB- trading is free as the breeze. For the rationale of trading, I'll use a football example.
Say that Goofy decides to leave Man U. on a Bosman. Man U is in the
Prem. doldrums with no chance at winning the title this year. Everton, however, are in the thick of the
Prem title chase. The only thing preventing Everton(in management's view) from winning the Title is an attacking Mid. Therefore, they offer Man U. Chip'n'Dale. Man U accepts the trade and gets two prospects for the future, While Everton gets the piece it needs to win the
Prem.
