In previous games I've played, I tend to use my starters in like 90% of my games. Why?... they're starters. The bench only starts if the starter is banned or injured.
My current game with Farnborough I have taken a different approach. If any player "earns" a 5 rating, they get benched next game. The Sub gets a start. If the sub earns an 8 rating that game, he gets another start. Anything below an 8, he goes back to the bench. If a player earns 2 6 ratings in a row... Benched. But in this case only for 1 game maximum... regardless of the performance of the sub.
Found that this works quite nicely, gives my subs more playing time, and lets me get a better grasp of their worth to the club (They play more games)... I do this regardless of skill or importance to the club.
I have no idea wether my players are getting it or not, but their average rating seems to be higher than in past games I've played.
Anyone else use this type of system or one like it?...
I hope nobody takes this as tipping or anything...
I'm currently in the "play the starters" rut. I find that my teams start out strong but wither away come March and April. The only time I deviate is in competitions. If the league is more important to me I tend to play subs in FA Cup, etc.
I like your idea and will give it a try. I'll let you know how it works out for me.
well, in past games, my bench was crap. This game I've actually put some money into the bench and games without the starters seem to go well... even the games where the team loses 5-3 the previous game and almost everyone is at 5's, my subs come back and are usually well rested and have better moral (after losing 5-3)... dunno... maybe its all in my head...
I try and get a rotation going whenever i can, but really it depends on your players. If the starter is a lot better than his replacement, he'll continue starting even if he's playing badly.
I find that if a player is on a good run,
i.e. a run of: 8-8-9-9-10-8...
A level 5 performance is on the way in the near future. Am i the only one? (wouldn't be the first time).

Yeah. Especially if it's a youngster. I think they just burn out or something, you have to ease them in gradually.
The trick is, i guess, knowing when to take them out just before they get that 5
