can never do it in their 1st season so this could be coded with newgens/regens.
Normally works 2nd season as long as they haven't signed pre contracts.

Have you successfully bought 14-16 year olds? Post #24
I would prefer to not offer them a contract. All I want to do is transfer them to my youth setup under a youth contract. They for whatever reason don't want to do that though. The team will with a 50% sell-on, but the player won't.
I am not sure if this happens IRL or not. Maybe I am trying to do something that doesn't normally happen anyways I am not sure.
You would think though that when a 16 year old for a small club gets a chance to move into the youth setup of a major club they would be happy to have the chance.

If a youth players worth buying, I sign him onto full time contract as a youth player - still pay him pittance for all the hard work, if you buy well, can usually sell them off for around £180,000 a pop if they turn out naff.
Buy james mcarthy from hamilton when he's 16, you'll see what I mean - he's now worth over £2mil after a season in derby youth team and half a season on loan at dundee fc.

You can only usually sign them when they're 17 and their full time contract starts.
Shouldn't the game inform you of this though? Instead of "going through the motions" of offering them a contract only to be told that they've "decided" to stay at their current club.
Would save a bit of time if a notice came up (ala signing Brazilian u18's in FM07) informing you that you cant sign the player due to his pre contract status.

whats the problem with offering them a proper contract, it only takes effect when they turn 17 anyway? If you are going to the hassle of bringing in such a young player from another club you won't just be kicking him out when he turns 17 and requires a proper contract.
Why would a kid want to be uprooted at such a young age away from his mates and everything he knows unless hes guaranteed a proper contract when the time comes? Theres also loyalty with the club that picked him up in the first place, towards the club itself and his teammates to consider.

I think it was made that way on purpose so that you couldn't sign every single decent player with no hassle. I remember building two teams of quality youngsters and still having a first team and selling the kids for profits. With Fm07 and FM08, it doesn't seem possible which is good in my book. Maybe it is a little too difficult, theres plenty of good youngsters who would jump at the chance to sign for Man Utd.
