It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default How to improve pass completion

After playing nearly 5 seasons with Valencia CF where i wont title after title i decided to try playing with Coventry City in the English Championship since i wanted a challenge. And it hasnt been very easy. In Valencia i played a slow Latin type of game where my team used to maintain possession, and dictate tempo of the game and control it no matter who the opposition was. My team would have average pass completion rate of 85% or so.
I have been struggling with Coventry although i am playing a mixed passing style unlike the short style i adopted at Valencia. How can i improve my pass completion rate and try to play possession style football. Most of my players are ok with their passing, i wouldnt see they are even average as some have stats around 17-18. Anyway any suggestions would be welcome? My preferred style is possession style football and although its a challenge i want to introduce this in English Football.

You have to understand that in every nation or even division it is played different kind of football. In ENG for example its mostly direct or long passing anyway try changing mentality of the players or set induvidual passing styles. It's hard to help since there is not enoug iformation. (tactic...)

Thats utter nonesense most teams in England don't use direct or long, maybe around 30 years ago but long gone are them days.

While IRL there are different cultures of football to take into consideration, on FM there is none and its an even playing field so to speak.

If you want to up the pass completion play a short slow game but for this to work you need to ensure your players are capable of playing at this slow speed.

Most teams play mixed, id say only Arsenal play 1 style all the time and rarely change.

For a short passing slow game you need players who are techniqually good and who won't give the ball away.

IRL I would say Bolton play direct. They run and fight, score from set-pieces - probably one of the teams with the best work ethic you will see.

In Real Life, and in my opinion:

Watford and Sheff Utd play long ball high tempo - effectively assault the opposition in IRL

Bolton & Reading play direct high tempo football

Chelsea play short passing low tempo
Aresnal play short passing

Pompey play mixed passing

Different styles used to suit the types of players you have in your team. Thats the philosophy that you should adopt in FM07

Best method is to experiment during friendliesn where the result doesn't matter but you can see how your players have reacted to the style you've asked

SOmetimes it's not too easy to see what is better... If you have low passing players (especially defenders), what would you do? Direct passing? Then they will more often just give the ball away... Very short passing? Well, then they can still make a mistake, that would be even worse.
I tried to use direct passing. Passing rate was like 55 % or so.. With Short passing its up to 70+%, but still I feel they are awful in building up the attack. DOnt know what to do..
