Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Wingers

i would like to discuss the run with ball, cross ball and forward runs options for wingers.

I would like to hear your suggestions on all of these please.

1. Run With Ball: i find that with run with ball often my wingers tend to run straight into an opponent they have no chance of getting round. but with run with ball mixed they do not run at defenders enough to worry them

2. Cross Ball: with cross ball on often my wingers tend to cross too much from a poor position which means that we lose possesion due to the ball being headed away and cleared etc. when instead the winger could of just passed to an unmarked team-mate and kept the play going. but with cross ball on mixed they don't cross very much at all even when in a good position

3. Forward runs: with forward runs often my wingers tend to get stranded up field. but with forward runs mixed they are too deep to have any real effect.

what are your opinions on the 3 points i have brought up?

cheers:thup:

I like to reply!

I agree completely. I think this match engine is fantastic - the best ever, and so good it is almost scary.

But... I think that if you added

"4. Why is jumping such an important attribute for wingers, when it ought to mean very, very little?"

you would have summed up the biggest issue there is with this engine.

The patch has helped setting up your wingers, but I still find that they are the "weak" position in the engine. Even when they play well in good and winning tactics, their AVR is 0.2-.0.3 lower than most other positions.

In my latest tactic I stopped playing with wingers. The most surprising result was that my cross completion was almost double. The improvement was a result of my MC's crossing. In general MC's are not as good at crossing as wingers, but they get plenty of space to make the cross, hence the remarkable improvement.

So in my oppinion you are absolutely right. I do not know if there is a solution, I have not been able to find it, but I would love to hear from some one if thet got a solution. So if anyone can play with wingers and reach 40-60% in cross completion on a consistent basis, I would love to hear.

yes that is a good... no great addition to my original points as in my game no matter which keeper i use, they always boot the ball to the wingers even if my GK distribute is defender collect and distibute to CB

Have to agree, wingers are a real problem position.

One can have pass completion well into the 80% mark, have one 2 or 3 tackles, but because they consistently have to challenge for the ball in the air (regardless of instructions to other players they try to hit the wingers head!) and becuase their cross completion is so low, they end up with a 6.

Contrast with a DC who'll play maybe a dozen passes, about 50% to 75% completed, they'll win some headers and make a few interceptions, and get a rating of 8.

good points brought up. I think (and it's probably obvious to you too) that Mentality and creative freedom are influencing factors that contribute to the actions the wingers take.

If your winger has high creative freedom and decisions I would try his crossing at mixed and let him make up his own mind. Same with forward runs. Running with ball is obviously needing good dribbling skills but again if he has high creative freedom set this to mix so he can decide for himself.

The mentality side of things is more murky and requires some playing about and fiddling with on your part. I also find it difficult to find a medium with mentality that suits players, this is because we have never really been given a disected explanation of mentality by SI.

But I would hazard a guess and say the less mentality you give your winger the less likely he will get forward which may be what you want if he is going forward to much at the wrong time. Conversely if he isn't getting forward enough then try raising it. You just have to try different things one at a time probably and see if there is any perceptable difference.

I don't know if this helped or if I am just rambling. Hope it does help.
