Im playing Man Utd and i need some help. I dont think im using Rooney to his full potential, and i think its a tactical problem. Now, he aint been playing that bad. It isnt awful, but far from great. Now i want to improve on his play, as he's my biggest disappointment with my team.
I play a basic 442 with farrows for wingers and full backs. I usually focus the ball down both flanks or set it to mixed. Im playing a short passing style for my offensive players and a more direct style for the defense, the more defensive minded MC, and my target man (Luca Toni (actually i dont play a target man, but he's configured like one )). My DCs and the DMC are set to defensive mentality, FBs at mixed, and most of the others are set to first notch at offensive.
Rooney are set at an attacking mentality with short passing. Mixed forward runs and running with ball. Often long shots. Rarely cross and through balls.
Now Rooney's underperforming. He rarely scores goals and he's producing too many 6's. As a team im doing great, but id like my precious jewel to shine a little brighter...
Forward runs mixed (He likes to come deep to get the ball)
Run with ball often
Through balls mixed
Creativity second notch of much
Mentality High Attacking
He always scores bags for me. Don't forget that maybe your team's configured to take the emphasis away from Rooney, whereas the emphasis should be on him.
Have Luca Toni knocking the through balls down to him
And there's no point in slinging high crosses into the box if you expect Rooney to get on the end of them..so I'd play with the passing focused to mixed so that both Toni and Rooney can benefit from your team's overall play.
Have your central midfielder with the creative bias putting through balls for Rooney to Run on to and collect, meaning his creativity and attacking bias should be set above normal.

From his stats, why does it look that he is better off as an AMC?
Because thats what he does best imo, as its what he does best IRL. Maybe not a full on AMC, but he plays better when he plays deep and drops off the striker a bit like Sheringham did so very well for many years.
I am in my first season with Man Utd and play a attacking 4-4-1-1 formation, with Rooney in behind my target man(klose). At first I struggled to get him to perform and he was scoring 6's at that time.
By just notching up his creative freedom to much, forward runs mixed, run with ball often(because of his midfield position in my game), and long shots to mixed- you will see that he starts chipping the keeper from 30 yards out in no time.

But he is using Luca Toni as a target man so Toni will be heading the ball forward to Rooney I imagine.
I havent had a problem with rooney.
Im playing just ur basic 4-4-2.
I got a good midfield of ronaldo, lampard, ronaldinho and downing. with rooney upfront with adriano.
I havent had to tweak any of the tactics, bcos adriano and rooney on my game atleast have been working well togeter nd rooney is grabbing 30+ on average a season in all comps. to some it may not be that impressive but his stats are reguarly in the 8's and 9's and he is setting up adriano for a number of goals aswell.
My tip would be to just think where u want rooney. do u want him to play upfront alongside the other striker. of do u want him in the sheringham role just behind the striker or what?
