In my first season, my defence were rock solid. They hardly conceded any. I'm Man Utd, and have anton ferdinand, vidic, evra and gary neville as my first choice defenders. I play a 4-4-2 system with a farrow for one of my central midfielders(scholes/sahin) and a barrow for the other(carrick).
However, this season even though I'm using the same tactic, and the same instructions for my defenders(and team), they've been conceding silly goals left, right and centre. It seems they've totally forgotten how to defend. It's really weird. I keep conceding at least 1 goal in every game.
Does anyone know how I can improve the situation? Also, what are the Closing Down, Marking & Tight Marking, defensive line instructions that is preferable for central defenders, fullbacks and my defensive midfielder? Would really appreciate any help here. Thanks.
With your central defenders give them closing down about 7-10 (lower end of mixed), zonal marking, tight, low creative freedom, mentality of about 6-9. Get them on mixed 'Try Through balls' and direct passing.
With your fullbacks buy someone better than Neville - Ratinho or Ryan Taylor are good choices.
Closing down should be higher to avoid wingers crossing. No forward runs. Try through balls on mixed. Passing on mixed (or direct if they are crap). Mentality can be marginally higher than the DC's. zonal marking, tight.
DMC rarely forward runs, low creativity and high on through balls. Zonal marking and tight. Let me know how that works.

Thanks, I'll try that out. Just one question though, why do you use zonal marking with a central defender? I've always thought that a central defender should be tightly marking a man(the opposition striker)?
If you man mark someone your DC's will follow him and can be dragged out of position. If they are on zonal marking they will only mark him once he comes into their area and so are less likely to be dragged out of position and create gaps that can be exploited.
Tight zonal marking gives you the best of both. It means once he comes into their zone they will mark him tightly and won't be dragged out of their zone. If he leaves the zone they will leave him alone.
Im not sure about tight marking. whats the downfall with using it? Must have high marking, but wot else? not hard to find a dc with high marking, so that means u shud always use it when u can?

I'd say a DC with some pace would be ideal so if the forward does beat them they can close him down and rescue the situation.
I think the downfall with using it is when you are marking a superfast striker with off the ball skills. Those type of forwards can leave a DC in the dust behind them. Hence why a pacy DC is best used.
i like to have it slightly deep around 8 and because my keeper is so good at rushing out 9 times out of 10 he intercepts the pass unless it's absolutely pinpoint. The key here isnt to stop the pacey striker, but to identify who keeps feeding him the balls and cutting hit off.
