In all previous versions of CM/FM I have managed to use the same tactic home and away. I've been able to rotate 7 or 8 players per game and still have great success. I have generally played 4-4-2 and this just isn't working in FM07. Am I being overly optimistic in hoping that this approach will translate to FM07? Has the match engine evolved that much or have I just had a crazy run of luck for the past 10+ years? I'm now getting frustrated. Have now settled on a narrow 4-2-3-1 formation which is effective in attack but the gap between defence and midfield seems to cause me to ship too many goals. If I put a DM in then the front 4 really become isolated. Any ideas? My defence doesn't sit too deep and the two midfielders aren't overly attacking so I'm a tad confused by the gaps that appear.
Apparently there is no 'killer' tactic in this version, and you have to 'tinker' with your tactics every match to beat the other team (or rather the AI!). Even if you do find a good tactic, from what I've read, it doesn't take other teams long to 'suss' you out.
This is a side of the game which I feel has put a dampner on the game, not the fact that there isn't one killer tactic as such, but the fact you have to mess around with your tactics all the time.
I agree. I tend to manage the "bigger" teams. It's reasonably fair to hope that if you win away at Man U/Chelsea/Arsenal that the same tactic would stand you in good stead at home in the next match against a "lesser" side but this isn't often the case. I have just tweaked my tactic to push the defence up (not playing offside though) and this has paid off in the last three games.
I have managed to work out a tactic which, touch wood, is working wonders for my Liverpool team, but I am just waiting for the collapse.
Basically I play a basic 4-4-2 pushing both wingers on and pushing Gerrard forward whilst also giving him a free role. I based all the player tactics on the generic settings that are in the 'Set as' menu and unticked the 'Passing' and 'Closing down' function. If I am getting dominated I go to attacking and push my defensive line up, I also play with the 'Match Stats' turned on and keep an eye on the possession percentage, if the other team get more possession, I tinker a little.
About 8 times out of 10 if you have the most possession you will near enough always get a draw or a win. But there are always teams that will hit you on the break, my bogey team are Bolton, I near enough out play them everytime, but they hit me on the counter-attack and then sit back and soak up the pressure. I managed tp do this by playing my first friendly games in their entireity (using Full Match), and then sorting out my tactics that way.
Try it yourself, it has worked for me, it is a case of trial and error, in my game I have a partnership of Michael Owen and Dirk Kuyt and they are scoring goals for fun!
Sure I have moaned about this game, but I have stuck with it and now I feel I am beginning to understand it's ways now, maybe not.
Good advice. For me the key is getting possession and also getting the defence to behave. If you keep the ball and the defence doesn't just belt the ball randomly, you tend to do OK. One downside is that to get the defnce to keep the ball, you generally need them to play short passes to a DM which goes against all of the formations I favour!
If you have a good squad, I'd say try out Waldemar's stronghold. can be foud at fmdownloads.net. I've used more or less the same tactic for a while, and I have around 60 unbeaten in the spanish league with Valencia.
You can get some more info from the "average rating 8.70..." thread.

This is very similar to what i use, i too find keeping things simple better, i have an alternative formation which involves having the wingers run towards the 'D' and fullbacks pushing up when im strugglimg and as i use it 1/3 games i find the AI has trouble dealing with this, great to use if i go a goal down before half time.
Whenever i try to assign individuals to specific tasks (apart from AM) the team tend to fall apart.
