I do use the player search function - after all, you would realistically know about the famous players around the world as you would follow the football world. In addition, clubs receive information on who is listed for transfer, loan, out of contract etc.
What is a big no no is the find function. Avoid that like the plague.
What you do otherwise is up to you.

I agree - while I haven't been in this business for long i don't see the problem with the player search function...

I only don't use it because it's useless - no loans ever come to me and I don't have money to buy players, so just have my scout set to 'youth search', I have no use for PS...

I know exactly what you're saying. My way is to only use the Player Search screen for a couple of searches, like:

Interested: Yes, Contract: Expiring
Interested: Yes, Status: For Loan

That way you get the players who would realistically go to you. Everyone else I rely on my scouts finding, if I have any that is.
