Wasn't Sonic originally to the Sega Console? And what have happened with Sega lately?

The Playstation effectively killed them off as Console producers.

With the MegaDrive they had 85% of the console market, but with the release of the Saturn and the Playstation, Sony decided to throw silly-money at Software/Games companies, eg. Core and Tomb Raider, made them an offer they couldn't refuse, and all at once you could get literally hundreds of games previously released on PC and newly released on console for the Playstation.

Technically the Saturn was a superior machine, in the real world it couldn't compete.

Goodbye Sega.
