I'm having great success with this with chelsea and notts forest.
With chelsea i am consistantly winning as you would expect but it is the manner in which that is pleasing. The opposition are often only getting one or 2 shots in a game that are usually off target. notable results so far include a 9-2 win in the fa cup final as well as coming from 3-0 behind against lyon to win 4-3 after changing to this tactic.
With Notts Forest i won league 1 at the first attempt getting 111 points in the process, after promotion i won the championship at the first attempt with 102 points (finishing above west ham with mascherano and tevez). I am now mid table in the prem at easter, only 3 points off 6th but 6 points above relegation. I am doing this with a side that in reality should probably be mid table in the championship with odds of 2000-1 at the start of the season.
So anyway, the tactic.
It is a classic basic 4-4-2.
Defence -
The CB should be above all else, solid defenders. They are set to rarely go forward and to concentrate on winning the ball and preventing scoring opportunities. High defensive attributes are needed, especially in pace, acceleration, marking, concentration, anticipation, jumping, heading and tackling.
The two FB are also primarily used to defend so shoudl have the basic attributes to defend. they do however push up to support the play with forward runs and deliver crosses from deep so good wing attributes are also important.
RCM - the more defensive of the pair, set to still venture forward and hit long shots when the opportunity arises but to primarily cover. Good all round midfield attributes are required with a slight bias towards defensive midfielder attributes are most effective.
LCM - the more attacking of the pair, set to run forward and shoot as well as support the front two. Good all round midfield attribues are required witha slight bias towards attacking midfilder attributes.
Wide Midfielders - these are the second most important players to the system apart from the target man. Passing is focused down both flanks with the wingers set to run forward and dribble often. aside from teh basic attributes to be a good winger, high flair and creativity setting are important as the wingers are set to have more creative freeedom than the rest of the side.
LCF - the target man.
THIS IS THE KEY PLAYER. crosses are set to be aimed at the target man from the wide players so he needs be tall with high attributes in teamwork strength, jumping, heading, first touch, composure. alongside these, good general attacking attributes in acc and pace, finishing concentration etc are neccessary. corners are also set to be delivered to the front post for the target man to flick on, this works for me with lots of goals being scored at the back post from the RCF and midfielders attacking the ball which has often looped the GK. (Drogba has been excellent in this role and Crouch has been absolutely sensational for forest, scoring 15 in 19 and getting 17 assists with an average rating of 8.42)
RCF - the quick skilful forward.
Set to run forward often, this player often gets onto the flick ons from the target man from corners and from open play. players need to be quick, high in composure as lots of one on ones tend to happen, finishing anticipation. (the general 'fox in the box' players e.g. owen, johnson, villa, shevchenko etc)
N.B. - i have set both attacking midfielders to have long shots often as i have lampard and ballack in Cm, it may be worth trying without this on if you dont have good long shots.
*** when i am struggling at half time or just after, i increase the width to full and move the tempo up 3/4 and then full if required as well as passing to the lowest diect setting and then upwards as the game progresses. this seems to ofetn make opportunities as the opposition tire.
I have uploaded this tactic into the fm uploads website under fm2007/tactics/ Rock solid 4-4-2.
