Go to player attributes, click VIEW on the upper right corner and select OVERVIEW. It shows a graph that would tell you basicly how attacking of defensive your players maximum efficient settings.

So am i right in my thinking on this,

20 x 11 = 220

So for a normal style tactic 50/50 att/def ratio i share my team out with half of the total value which is 110 for a 50/50 setup, which i worked out like this.

This is for a narrow 41212 formation no wingers

gk 10
dc 4
dc 6
dr 8
dl 8
dmc 6
mc 12
mc 12
amc 14
sc 14
sc 16

would you say thats a balenced set up for global mentality of 10

then if i wanted to make a more attacking mentality set-up i should increase the global mentality by lets say 5 then i should look at my total value of 220 mentality then divided that into 3/4 should be 157 for attacking and 63 for defence spread over your 12 players, obiously this is the tricky part, you have to decide which players are going to be more attacking then the rest giving a balenced mentality through out the team.

Im already into testing the 50/50 def/att tactic and will be thinking about how to set about making a balenced attacking tactic and then you could mirror your attacking tactic into a defensive tactic, thus giving you a set of tactics for att normal defence situations.

This idea seems very plosable to me.

People shouldn't be getting confused into splitting it so that half are attacking and half are defending though, that's not the idea.

The key is that the majority of your players both defend & attack through being given a normal mentality.

A lot of people think that giving someone normal mentality means he's not defensive or attacking, which is not true, he's both. He's just not as extreme as someone set to attacking or defensive.

If you imagine everybody set to a mentality of 10 (normal), you would in fact have 10 outfield players all defending and attacking depending on the situation. Now like I say, they won't be as defensive or attacking as a player set to one of these mentalities, but the fact is you'll have MORE players defending and attacking than you would if you just set 5 to defend and 5 to attack, as the 5 attackers would ignore defensive duties and leave just the other 5 to defend against 7 or 8 normal mentality attacking players from the AI.

I agree you shouldnt be splitting it 50/50 what you have to do is make sure there is a balence if you want a normal tactic, then if you want a more attacking tactic you have to give extra mentality to some more then others depending on what area of the field you want to play through.

Or am i getting this wrong, i dont know the answers but to me you have to draw a line and say yes that player has to be 75% defence minded other wise he will be up field when the ball is popped in behind him.

*rolls up sleaves*

Excellent post, i've been setting my team up along the rule of two theory but this season have kept the mentalitys much lower in general accross the whole team. I find that I am slightly more solid at the back and the forwards still create chances, whether they score them seems to depend totally on there morale and confidence

Not quite right. The maximum is 11 * 20 = 220, but there is also a minimum, which is 11 * 1 = 11. Therefor, the midway is (220 + 11) / 2 = 115,5.
