Attacking & Defending - Some of the mentality basics Post #91 | | Joe Blow

Okay, now all this makes sense and I’ve always used team and player mentality according to Cleon’s description – which must be why I’ve always had reasonable succes although I’m still struggling with ’07. I do assume btw that mentality doesn’t only affect a players position but also his decisions: passing direction for example.
Now, not to overcomplicate things, but what I’ve always wondered about is: how does player mentality relate to farrows and barrows? Let’s say I have an MC with attacking mentality and two MC’s to his left and right with normal mentality. This means the attacking MC will play (slightly) in front of the MC/L and MC/R, and makes more attacking passes and runs. All pretty straightforward, right?
Now, let’s say I farrow my MC to AM. This means the MC becomes an AM when my team has possession. I assume that he still plays slightly in front of his MC position when the team is not in possession, but what happens when my team has possession? Will he play in front of his AM position due to his attacking mentality, which means he will be right between my strikers? Or does he play in the AM position, between the opposition’s midfield and defence, where I want him to be, and does the mentality tool only make him try more killer passes and shots?

i definatly agree with the balanced mentality across the whole team.finding the rite combination for your players can be quite tricky due to the quality of opposition you play during pre season.
but with balanced mentality. do people believe that a balanced closing down is possible, and a balanced creative freedom and passing style.
ive been testing this with mixed results. for example if i have team instructions all on mixed)in the middle) , it means my average point is 11 for each (passing . creative freedom.) so 11 x by 11 players = 121, this means i have 121 to share amongst my players. and the average will be equal with my chosen number in team instructions.
i personally feel the relationship between individual instructions and team instructions, is that they are more or less the same things, eg if they were seperate when u make your team instructions, your individual instructions would not change.
basically if they were different. and worked differently. making team instructions would not automatically change the individual instructions.
more important for this is passing i believe, people trying to play team short passing when they have theyre whole back line in direct football. thats already half the team, so this is likely to cause mistakes,
so if you want to play a short style of football. 7 on the team instructions(not including ultra defensive or all out attack).
7x 11 = 77. this gives you 77 points accross the whole team. when this is short style it works out that the majority or *overall will have short style also, also if you played a direct style of 15 or 150 points. the majority of your players will play this style( you must use your whole points but cant be over or under)
this has definatly helped me when it comes to seeing the balance of my team, not just giving my team attackin mentality, and expecting to score more goals. if i change my team attacking mentality by 2 points. i will also increase each individual players by 2 points. this definatly creates a balance, not how much more i can add without doing further testing,, anyone got thoughts on this? let me know

right this is a top thread have not added anything for god knows how long. Due to working overseas and not much time to play after work. Right what confuses me slightly is this as an example lets use van persie.
His stats would indicate that only going forwards is the way with him, so if i set his mentality to one notch below attacking i can expect him to tackle back or shadow a player but if i break down there attack i should expect to see him advance forwards. Would this be the correct assumption?
So does this mean that in fm07 the tactics now out weigh the players attributes. Would for instance a player as an dc/sc be better at playing in a global mentality instead of van persie? Even if his finishing, off the ball were say 10 compared to RVP's 16+.
Now if the mentality is that big it now begins to show how realistic the game is getting look at Henry whenever he loses the ball he tracks back or tries to cover a gap thus setting him to normal mentality would in the game make him tackle back when needed. I hope you see my point

thegooner,
remembering your the manager you can tell your players to stand on their heads, they will try to do it (oh the power is so nice) but then you have to think, if i tell van persie to battle back will he be good at doing it will he try win the ball, or half win it but the ball pops up in a terrable position for the rest of the team to try sort out, or will he win it with flying colours and then turn it into an attack, So after all that is said, yes he will try to do what you tell him but how well he dose it is somthing else.
you have to choose the correct ball winners to get the ball quiet simple
same with atackers and defenders
once you understand what the slider dose its a lot easyer, then you can go off and try loads of things and work out what works best in your situation, in my eyes robin van persie battling for balls is not a good thing, he has quiet a poor temper and is quiet unsporting and will more often then not lose his coolness and get sent off for a headbutt |
