In the words of SAF, I have to say I am vewwy vewwy disappointed with the Scouting situation in champo4.
I've managed to hold out on purchasing the game as the Moll has insisted I spend some time with her but, after earning some brownie points with plane tickets to hot places, she relented and agreed cm4 could adorn my games collection.
Hip hip, hurray!
So it was off to the local shoppe to get CM4, rip off the wrapping and test the glories of LLM at the cutting edge.
The first thing to point out that running the Scottish and English Leagues appears to take up eight leagues, which was two more than recommended for my system. At first I thought this must be some kind of mistake since I've just got a nice 2GHz processor - not quite cutting edge but not too shabby either. FFS, what sort of game is it where my pc can't handle just Scotland and England.
Anyway, I opted to load Scotland, EPL and Serie A which is apparently the maximum my wee pootah can manage. The game has been a helluvah slow - about on par with Scotland, England and Italy running on CM01/02 with my old 900MHz processor. Can't say I'm happy.
Anyway, that's not the real reason (try saying that, SAF) for being upset.
I've opted for the traditional approach of only signing players found by my scouts. I have refrained from even looking at the list of famous and out of contract players in my area for potential purchases.
I've managed to hire staff (Asst. Man, 3 decent coaches and a scout) without difficulty: cf the old champo where you couldn't get scouts for love nor money. So well done SI for that - makes a big difference to LLM style play.
But the big problem has been with finding any sort of free player thereafter. All the scouts have managed to come up with, even where they are specifically looking for youth players, have been players already contracted with other, largely non-league, clubs. You've got to pay a fee for those.
Now, this may be a deliberate ploy to make things harder at the bottom and if so, well, as Lard might say, "musshtn't grrumble." and I suppose I should be relishing the new challenge of having to soldier on with a thoroughly reprehensible squad.
However, I fear that this has not been a deliberate ploy and a whole host of young, out of contract players who used to be readily found in CM01/02 (even if most of them were minging) are just fannying about not being picked up by my scouts. If this has been an oversight then it must surely detract from the enjoyment and satisfaction of being a LLaMa.
I would like to find some young, untested players and try to mould them into solid pros but my scouts can't find them. Is there a "scout for players without a club who will play for a few peanuts and a MacDonalds Kids Meal" button which I've missed?
Of course, I have not considered that my scouts might just be rubbish. Anyone else had this difficulty?
Yes, I have to say that I thought the demo was very poor indeed with the gold version not much better. I thought that perhaps the full game would be money well spent but after half a season I am starting to conclude that the only benefit over CM3 is the 2D match engine whilst the rest of the game seems much poorer overall - slower, less involving somehow.
Hmm, perhaps the EP3 will make dramatic improvements to justify my purchase.
I wonder if the scouting anomoly will be fixed, if indeed it is an anomoly.
With 512 MB, even on an XP machine, it is more than enough RAM for CM4 (it does not seem to ever be using up the RAM or swapping to disk). However, a 1.67 gigahertz Athlon appears to be the slow spot. I'm not updating the processor anytime soon, though, so I am dealing with that. I am sure performance would be better if I was willing to run it without all the leagues and divisions active (I compromised by not setting any of them to full detail, because I don't really care to see the highlights of any matches/competitions I am not in).
The scouting thing definitely needs work. Unless you need the best scouts in the world to find out the attributes of players. Since I started a new game with "ARSE" in the init.cfg file, I seem to have fewer players recommended by my scouts that are still completely obscured by the fog of war. Must be coincidence.
All I can tell you is my experience. I run them all, with every division, but not on full detail, and it does not thrash to the drive. I have watched it. At least, it doesn't thrash to the drive if you run from the beginning of the game for about 6 months. I've stopped at around that point each time. I let it run on holiday for two years and it crashed sometime between year two and three.

WHAT WERE THE TESTERS DOING?!

I thought I was safe from this GQ shïte in here.
Sigh.

I think Rekwob would have done a good job as a tester.
