I don't think it's easy. It's just not as frustratingly inconsistent as the last couple of iterations. I think SI have got the balance about right.
To be honest, if you are an experienced CM/FM player who takes the time to setup decent tactics, training and keep the morale of the players high it should be easy to walk the league with the likes of Man U.
My QPR game - am 7th in first season in Champ (November), slightly overachieving maybe but not easy / not hard. Loving it, just about right -BUT without wwfans advice / posts I suspect I would be struggling but I am a self confessed non FM genius (depite playing CM/FM for 10 years straight).
If found it relatively easy as Aston Villa manager to win the league. The only two teams that caused me any trouble were United and Chelsea. Apart from that, the tactics I used generally did ok (my Striker was never that prolific though, most goals came from my AMC or wingers).
So now i've taken on the burden of being Hereford United manager. A much more interesting challenge if you ask me, so I expect things to get a bit harder from now on.

What season did u win the league and wot tactics did u use? I dont want to copy them just want an idea of where im goin wrong
I won straight promotion with Barnsley losing only twice in the league all year. I did not even sign anyone either. Just played our real life tactics of hoofing the ball up field towards Big Stan...so basically yes the game is easy.
It's true that managing top teams isn't as easy as most people think, but I've always played the game stating with a non league team. (Yeading is my god-awful team of choice) and I try and get 'em promoted. With a transfer budget of $0, you might find that a bit of a challenge, Kev.
In my opinion, this game has the same difficulty level as all the others...

Come back after you win the 1st Div with Torquay Unt (in the Conference if you can't find em) and I'll start listening to you.
Moron.
The point is though id imagine the majority of people who buy the game support a top team and therefore when they choose who to play as they pick their favourite team. I always start as Liverpool as i just don't find i get as hooked or as involved with the game if i play as someone else. I've played seasons in previous versions as MK Dons, Notts Forest, Gretna, Leicester City and even started unemployed on occassions and no matter how much success i achieve with these clubs its nowhere near as much fun as succeeding with the team i support.
Yes its easier with top teams if you spend the transfer budget every year but i always play with the concept of bumping up the bank balance (in FM06 i reached £1 billion after 25 seasons) going the season unbeaten and trying to break the league records currently set.
I actually prefer managing random teams (as long as I like the kits). Im a Man City fan from Bounemeouth but always find managing those 2 teams a bit frustrating - you have unreasonable expectations before you start and the game is enough of a challenge with out that - am loving FM08 so far though - as QPR, (chosen not randomly selected) - and my fave teams to manage are St Etienne or Carlisle - dont actually know why though.! Even Bury was a giggle for a bit!
