Morning Beevster! I could have worded my post better, if I was intellag, no, intalig, no, inteli, oh! sod it! Clever! enough. Sorry.
I am trying to produce my own consistently good tactic. I don't mean a so called "super, world beater, win all type of tactic. I wonder whether or not some of them are according to "Hoyle" or not.
Some people like to use them and why not. I don't even want to pinch someone elses either. The only ones that I have used are the drop down in game player positions. I have fiddled about with those with some small amount of success but nothing lasting.
I find, generally, that I can get my players individual instructions more or less right, using Marc Vaughans information of last year. I don't seem to be able to get the team instructions right, No matter which system I use. Everyone seems to have differing and opposite opinions of team instructions and mine seem to differ from everyone elses.
If anyone has a basis for a reasonable consistent "Team Instruction" then please, would they avail myself of it? Kind regards to all.

Beevster, I was one of those who praised and agreed with your post in the "big" thread, but I do have to disagree slightly with your suggestions that a manager hasn't told players to take long shots "often".
While you're right that this shouldn't be used as a default setting within a formation, there will be occasions (poor opposition keepers, low shot stopping attributes) when it's a great trick to use both in game and IRL.
I think we can probably all remember playing football and being told that the other team's keeper looks a bit dodgy so test him out from range a few times!

iirc, Rijkaard told his team to try long shots (unexpected long shots) often against Chelsea in the second leg in 2005. (which Chelsea won 4-2).

Just thought i would dig this up.
Ive been noticing that when im playing a normal team mentality my players do a lot better with mixed instructions for forward runs.
It didnt just stop there, also when i play defensive team mentality and i went rarely that too gave a bonus too the team.
The same with attacking mentality set your forward going players onto often fwd runs, and it works quiet well.
I think this is what they mean when the top dogs talk about "not contridicting instructions" in other words if you wants to defend dont tell your fullbacks midfielers to do mixed or often fwd runs, same when you want to attack, all the players who have attacking mentalitys and also have a team attacking mentality should be doing often forward runs.
Not sure if this applys to any of the other instructions yet, maybe somone else has noticed a link.
but you must choose the correct players for that given situation, no point putting ur stikers on rarely fwd runs just because your defending, that would be a contridition on the other end of the scale.
anyway have a play see what you think, it might just be my players are in form atm who knows.

Beevster- I've been deploying my team in a similar fashion matching instructions to mentality. My defensive players use rarely, whereas my attacking players are encouraged to get forward often. I leave everything else to mixed (apart from long shots) as I feel forward runs is by far the most influential. I've been doing this for some time now in FM2007.
Any attacking full-backs and midfielders I now match forward run instructions to mentality (plus closing down, but I digress).
The only exception are the attacking players already in forward positions. As you've said already in the thread offsides are commonplace with "forward runs often" for strikers; and they are already in forward positions.
Sounds like we're on the same wavelength.

Dont mean to blow my own trumpet here but.
Before the change i had goals conceded the same as goals scored, in other words we sucked but not that bad considering i am a newly promoted team whos perdicted place was 20th in league two, anyway i was sitting in around 8th place knocking on the door for a promotion playoff place but could not get sufficiant form to get into they top group.
So i started to implement this into my game plus also i read loversleeper talking about betting odds and using the media question to set up your next game, so i played with this and then set up my tactics and fwd runs depending on mentality opposition betting odds and my overall view on how the match would swing, since then.
14 games
9 wins
4 draws
1 lost
goals for 17
goals against 5
As you can see totaly diffrent outcome, now im pushing for an automatic promotion place, shame i got 2 games left and theres a 3 pt gap.

It makes perfect sense when you consider that mentality is of paramount importance. As I said I've been doing the same but matching closing down to it too.

So what would happen if you set your forwards to forward runs rarely?

I used to do this with my Exeter side- my big target man was set to this with supply "to head," so he flicked the ball on for his pacey strike partner (who was set to "mixed"). Worked a treat, especially when I set my keeper to kick long to the target man in question.
