Default 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow formation discussion only

Ok i used this formation in 06 its not my tactic but it worked very well, its my favourate style of play its set up with 3 def midfield type players but 2 of which have fwd runs, there aim is to do lots of through balls, there is an amc which dose the link up to the strikers but also help with goals.

Now i have most of it set up alright but in 06 you could get away with most players on team mentality (attacking 18 in this case) and ur dcs on defensive 6, mainly because of the 3 def midfield players who dominate the middle of the park and cover your def pritty well.

Ive tryed this tactic in 07 and it hasnt coped anywhere near as well as it did in 06, but as i like the style of play i would like to try make it happen once again.

So my problem is this, im confused how to set up player mentality when im playing with attacking mentality global 15-18, in the manual and also in a thred called "experiment" it says if your playing an attacking mentality global so you dont confuse players you must set them all on attacking mentality in personal instructions, so i tryed this, i started off by staggering the team over the attacking section of mentality so def 15 dmc 17 mc 18 amc 19 sc 20, now i found it just looks silly but i tryed it anyway, but my shots off target was no good and i couldnt get goals from my team clear cut chances just blasted into space, so i reduced all by 2 notches except the def who cant go any lower (according to the manual), but still it hasnt helped my team score goals, chance after chance wasted so i put everyone onto 15 player mentaliy and still no good, so im lost as how im suppose to make this work, so maybe there is someone who has come across this situation and could shed some light on how to set up player mentality with team attacking mentality 15-18.

My other settings in the game are:

Mentality 15-18
creative freedom 11 for most except the amc who is on 15, strikers 13, and the defenders around 8-11
passing style 4-7
tempo 1
width 11
closing down 10 except for 2 mc's who are on 15
time wasting 1, if i score a few goals i switch it up to 11
defline 12
tackling normal

The dmc is holding up the ball

Now you must also consider im playing as Arsenal

strikers have fwd runs mixed rwb often longshots rarely through balls often cross balls mixed.

Heres a look at the formation

---sc-sc---
----amc----
-<-mc mc->- As you can see here are 2 side arrows to give some width and also help out the dr dl when in defence
----dmc-----
dl-dc-dc-dr--

Now you can see why i like to play this style with arsenal, plenty of through balls plenty of pace needed and a deadly amc like baptista who can finish with his head and his feet, in 06 this really was the king of tactics. Sadly at the moment i cant score even tho the chances are coming in at 20-25 shots per game, passing i have improved from 65-69% up to 70-79% and posession is around the 55% mark most games, key areas of the field are doing there job for interceptions, winning headers and tackles.

Thats all the info i can think of for now, so if you have any ideas to help me with mentality please leave a message

I will probably join in this discussion after I get a healthy 4-4-2 Box going. This is another formation used extensively in Brazil and I believe can be effective in FM.

Ok i think i have got the mentality sorted nicly for this one altho im doing further test still to see what works best.

I looked up some info about the 5x5 system as this fits into my players perfectly i thought id give it a go, so i started with 5 mentality for defenders and 15 for attackers. it was ok but still not anything brillent, while i was reading about the 5x5 system i also picked up that you could add mentality to the defence and take some away from attack.

So i went with 7 mentality for defenders and 13 for attackers.

this has made the tactic solid instantly by solid i dont mean its defensivly tight attackingly flowing but what i mean is that the players now work as a team, things are done in a lot better manner, shooting stats have dropped but the shots on target have imrpoved and the goal ratio has imrpoved really well, so i think im going to stick with this mentality system for the time being.

im now working on defensive side of the tactic, seeling up the holes and making it sound, ill be back soon with further reports.

I take your point on player mentality, but the best way i've found to get the best out of the 4-1-2-1-2 formation is to play you full back further up the field - playing as wing backs, enabling a lot more crosses into the box. Passing should be focused on either flanks. I've tried this with liverpool and won the prem in the first season, making risse and finnan my best performing players for the year!

Yeh im really interested about getting full backs to work in 07, so far i have failed, but sadly the only way i think its possible is to split the mentality of the back line which in turn will screw the 5x5 system, so i could be back to square 1 within a flash.

at the moment i am going thro an injury crisis which aint helping my testing.

12 first team players out injured..

its not my training because i just started a new game but i used this training for a whole season testing the tactic the first time so im just unlucky at the moment.

So the only really defensive players are the CB's and the DMC? Do you make the DMC close down often?

Ok so things are going quiet well atm, apart from a gay 1-0 loss to chelsea away, i have been able to dictate play and win my games

heres the current settings:

Mentality: 13 home 11 away
Creative freedom: 6
Passing style: 4
Tempo: 4
Width: 20, 11 away
Closing down: 9
Time wasting: 4 home 10 away
Defensive line: 13 home 10 away
Tackling: Normal
Focus passing: mixed
Marking: zonal
Target man supply: head
Tight marking: yes

GK
Mentality: 6
Creative freedom: 2

Distrbute to: fabregas (mc)

DR/DL
Mentality: 11
Creative freedom: 2
Passing: team
Closing down: 15
Tackling: team
All mixed apart from longshots rarely
Rest default

DC
Mentality: 6
Creative freedom: 2
Passing: team
Closing down: team
Tackling: team
All runs crosses longshots: rarely
The rest default

DMC
Mentality: 9
Creative freedom: 2
Passing: team
Closing down: 14
Tackling: team
All rarely except through balls: often
Rest default

MC
Mentality: 12 somtimes one is 11 the other 13(staggerd)
Creative freedom: 15
Passing: 8
Closing down: 15
Tackling: team
Everything mixed except through balls: often
Rest default

AMC
Mentality: 14
Creative freedom: 10
Passing: team
Closing down: 13
Tackling: team
Everything on mixed except through balls: often
Tight marking: No
Rest default

FC
Mentality: 15
Creative freedom: 10
Passing: team
Closing down: team
Tackling: team
Everything on mixed
Swap position: other fc do this for both guys
Tight marking: No
Rest default

I decided to go with some things on team setting so i could easly control what they are doing in-game, without changing loads of indavidual settings, i found this works well for wet games plus when you want to change ur style of play.
there is also side arrows on both MC's, and somtimes on both FC's i change this around to keep the AI guessing, i may well go down the flanks if im pushing my striker wide.
I dont expect this to work with any other teams but Arsenal, but you might get lucky! , if you have any ideas to make it better please i love to know

Also the width thing away from home is an early test, i hear its better to go narrow away, but this remains to be seen.

I play normal width... but I have my wingers (Hleb and Rosicky if fit) with arrows going inwards... and my wing backs having arrows going up, so they provide the width... like in real life.

Thanks for the help man... maybe you could have your CM's on running with the ball often... Rosicky and Hleb are lethal when running at the defense.
