I could try it with a 4-3-3, but I reckon the wings would be exploited.
Last season I tried what you have done, 2 games in a row it was 0-0 30 minutes before the end so I put my AMs into F RL positions, and we won 2:0 both times, iirc.

We're producing goals, but also concede a few to many so I'm trying to tighten the defence.

The FR/L spots are for wingers, not strikers. A natural AML is natural for FL as well. This is not the case with strikers.

With that in mind...
How does a MR perform when farrowed into an AMR or FR position when he is only skilled in MR.
Does the game take that into account?

AMR/L play equally well in MR/L and FR/L. MR/L only play MR/L.

Not sure on the farrow thing, but it shouldnt make a big difference as they are put in their natural position to begin with.
