Does anyone know of any players who turn into great coaches, and if they play for you how do you turn them into coaches.
For example, I have Steven Gerrard who has under Personal "Definately looking to go into coaching with a view of moving to management". He's 37 but I can't seem to change him to a coach.

juninho from lyon ace trainer but he also plays untill 38 but after that he is available

I think you have to wait until they retire. I'm currently signing a lot of old players with a view of becoming coaches just for that. Dennis Wise, Gareth Southgate, Poyet, Costacurta, etc.

The coaching/players thing always confused me.
I had Figo who retired and had excellent stats (lots of 20s) but didn't want to become a coach.
I then had Paolo Maldini and Cafu retire, who both had pretty average stats (especially seeing as their defending stat was around 12).

i really think its random
one query, i had a player who said he was definately going to try management when his career finished, he then announced his retirement, retired at the end of the season and he was gone from the game, is that just a bug?
